Fashion Friday

April 10, 2020

Quarantine life has me missing my shoes.  Big time.

Considering my time outside is limited to dog walks and toddler nature explorations, I barely need to put on shoes at all.  Let alone a fabulous pair.

And oh how fabulous they are.  My shoe collection is something I am actually quite proud of.

Shoes were the first category of fashion I started collecting.  My first designer pair was a classic black Yves Saint Laurent pump with white tonal stitching.  They’ve been brought back to life twice – one lost a heel – and I still wear them to this day.

Many years ago my grandmother gave me a book called The Shoes of Salvation.  It’s a quick, illustrated read that is absolutely darling.  And 100% true.  Shoes can be our salvation.

After lurking on Tik Tok for several months, I finally shared my first video.  No lie, it took me FOREVER to create and I still have no idea what I’m doing.  It’s today’s Fashion Friday.

You can check it out here.

Here are the shoes featured on today’s Fashion Friday.

Prada Monolith Derby Shoes

NYFW SS20 OOTD 1 The Vampire's Wife

The best story I can share about these shoes is that when I wore them to NYFW one of the press photographers shouted at me, “Hey Cinderella, you look gorgeous but lose the shoes!”  To which I replied, “the shoes are the best part!”

Gucci Studded Loafers

NYFW FW18 Day 5 OOTD

They have studs.  They have snakes.  They are legitimately lethal.  Every time I wear them I end up clicking my heels together and cutting my ankle bone on the golden studs.  But they are so worth it.  I’ll bleed for these.

Bottega Veneta Storm Boots

Bottega Veneta storm boots

The combat boots of my dreams.  After searching for two years with numerous failed attempts, these finally found me.  Correction: I legitimately stalked them for two months calling every store in a 100-mile radius until I found my size in stock. They were terribly hard to get.  They make me taller.  They’re comfortable as hell.  It’s a score I feel I earned.

Balenciaga BB Boots

Jacquemus coat & No 21 Motel Skirt

Everything is twice as nice in these double “B” Balenciaga boots.  I love the kitten heel.  I love that they’re tweed and not leather.  They compliment a fancy outfit just as much as jeans and a tee.  Every time I wear them, I get stopped at least twice by admirers.

Check out these other iterations here.

Jimmy Choo Brelan Boots

Bermuda shorts suit

I’m realizing I have a thing for snakeskin boots.  These were on my wishlist for fall and when they finally went on sale, I pounced.

I love that they don’t have zippers.  The print is super versatile, allowing me to wear them with brown, black and everything in between.

They are still available at 50% off.

Valentino Dot Pumps

Valentino Dot Pumps

The cheeky 60’s mod vibe of these heels is SO fun.  I feel so ladylike every time I wear them.  This print was a signature for Valentino when this collection debuted in 2016 so I’m thrilled I have a piece of fashion history.

Remarkably, the boot version is still available here.

Givenchy Buckled Snakeskin Boots

Givenchy buckled boots

A signature style for Givenchy, these boots are my rockstar shoes.  I always channel Lenny Kravitz when I wear them.  This version of snakeskin was super rare for the brand, so they are another pair I’m so happy to have in my collection.

Givenchy still makes this boot and the classic black is stunning.  This red snakeskin pair is a traffic stopper.

Top 5 Favorites – March 2020

April 8, 2020

Your Top 5 Favorites from March 2020 were all about cozy work from home essentials and taking advantage of great online sales.

Top 5 Favorites – March

1.Moisturizer– I first shared this moisturized in my Sunday Series because I scored it for 25% off.  It has a cult following (Victoria Beckham is one of its earliest fans).  You’re instructed to use it and nothing else for 27 days.  By the end, your skin is supposed to be totally transformed.

I’m on day 18 and I can definitely say my skin is glorious.  Super moisturized and plump feeling.  Zero irritations.  Stay tuned for a full review once I complete 27 days!

2. Gold chain necklace – this was also something I scored on sale and you guys loved it.  The chunky, choker vibe is edgy yet versatile.  I pair mine with this one, and together they make SUCH a statement.

This one is currently 40% off and the other is almost sold out.  Get them before they’re gone!

3. Joggers – my loungewear review was by far the most popular post in March.  Who isn’t living in sweatpants right now?  My exact pair is sold out, but this print is the same style and these are the non-cropped version.  I adore how substantial and cozy the fabric is.  Worth every penny!

4. 90’s jeans – while I’m not wearing jeans during quarantine, I pounced on these because they went on sale.  They are high rise, loose fit and super chic.  Pair them with cropped or front tuck tees and sneakers for an it-girl vibe.

I also love the darker wash.

5.Wide leg cropped pants – I’ve owned these pants for years and talk about them ad nauseum.  For good reason too.  They flatter EVERY body type, are priced right ($72) and come in 6 colors and 2 lengths.

They went on sale so I snagged them in black.  Check out their counterparts: this straight leg pair and this slim leg pair.

How to Style a Silk Skirt

April 6, 2020

Anine Bing Silk SkirtAnine Bing Silk SkirtAnine Bing silk skirt // Alexander Wang sweater (similar) // Le Specs sunglasses
Givenchy boots (on sale; similar here) // Bottega Veneta bag

While we shot this look pre-quarantine, it couldn’t be a better time to post it.

I love a good silk skirt.  They truly are a closet staple.  I own a champagne colored one and knew I wanted to add a black one to the mix.  Right now this skirt is 25% off.

In fact, Anine Bing is doing a 25% off sitewide sale.  It’s a great time to save on her other closet staples like graphic tees, denim and silk separates.

If you’re unfamiliar with her, she is a model influencer turned designer.  Beyond her cool-girl style that is copied the world over, she’s legit.  This isn’t a blogger playing designer.  She’s the real deal.  Her brand started in 2012 and its aim is to create chic, comfortable pieces that can be worn day to night.

I picked up this sweatshirt and these joggers in the sale.  I’ve been trying to add more chic loungewear to my closet (because WFH) but SO much is sold out!

If you missed my post on the 3 loungewear brands I’m loving, now is a great time to check them out.  They’re carried by several retailers and actually have joggers, sweatpants and sweatshirts in stock.

But back to this silk skirt.  I elevated the look with statement boots and a cozy sweater, but you could take it up a notch further or dress it down.

I’d add a silk cami, leather jacket and heeled sandals for something dressier.  To dress it down, try a graphic tee and sneakers.  These are my fave graphic tees are these are my fave sneakers.

The One That Got Away

April 5, 2020

Givenchy F/W 2009

It was 2009.

As soon as I picked up the hanger, I knew.  This piece was special.

It was a dress, in fact.  Wool.  Ruched bodice.  Gathered waist.  Snug.

The kicker was the neckline.  Prefaced with extremely strong shoulders, it was adorned with a heavy chain-link choker.  It probably weighed 10 lbs.

I looked at the price.  Originally $2800.  Marked down to $525.

Arm heavy, I marched to the dressing room.

Please don’t fit.  Please don’t fit.

Aw, f*ck.  It was made for me.

This was a dress you conquer the world in.  Nothing about it was timid.  Demure.  It kicked ass and took names.  It could do that resting on a hanger.  Imagine the possibilities once you put it on.

It was Givenchy F/W 2009.  The Riccardo Tisci years.

As a collector, I look back on this moment and think, “what an idiot!”

I had legacy in my hands – on sale to boot – and I passed it up.  What was I thinking?!

At the time, Sex and the City was all the rage.  Every woman in the world wanted a pair of Manolos.  And we all knew their going rate – $525.

This dress could be my proverbial pair of Manolos.

I knew what Manolos did for Carrie.  I knew they had the potential to changes lives.  Be the sole item on a wedding registry.  Disprove an urban shoe myth.

So why not make this Manolo monetary equivalent mine?  Why not agree to conquer the world?

Like I said, I’m an idiot.

Yes, it was my limited budget.  But it was something more.  At the time, work was my world.  And I couldn’t wear this dress to work, could I?  No, it would be too much.  Therefore, I had to pass.

I have since learned that when the perfect dress is staring you in the face, you buy it. It doesn’t matter if you have nowhere to wear it.  You pounce.

Because the occasion to wear it will come.  Anytime you frantically search for the perfect dress, you never find it.  Instead, you overpay for a mediocre runner-up.

Always have a conquer-the-world dress in your arsenal.  You never need permission – or an occasion – to conquer.

What I’m Coveting

April 1, 2020

If you’re a long time reader of In Spades, you’ve heard me talk about Everlane before.  They make great closet staples at fair prices.  I first discovered the brand after searching for the perfect t-shirt.  My first order was their tank tops and tees, and I haven’t looked back since.

Everlane is doing a 25% off site-wide sale until Friday.

While they are pretty great about doing sales (their Pay What You Can is awesome) this is the first time the ENTIRE collection is on sale.

If you’re in need of some great wardrobe basics, now is a great time to pounce.

Here are some of my Favorite Everlane pieces
Jackets

The Best Linen Blazers

This linen blazer is the perfect transition piece from spring to summer.  It’s a cotton blend so it breathes well and it comes in 6 colors.  I may have to add the sandstone or soft rust color to my closet.

I’m wearing a size 0.  It runs TTS.  The oversized fit gives a bit of edge to a sophisticated piece.  I love that it can be worn casual with jeans or dressed up (over a silk slip dress and heels) for a night out.  The blazer is fully lined so it’s a high quality piece.

Currently on sale for $108.

Everlane Cropped Denim Jacket

This cropped denim jacket is a closet staple.  If you don’t have a denim jacket in your life, now is a great time to take advantage (I own 4).  I’m wearing an XS (runs TTS).

It’s currently on sale for $39.

If you’re looking for a regular length denim jacket, this one comes in 4 washes and is on sale for $66.  I love the bone colored wash for spring.

My jacket is paired with this Everlane skirt, on sale for $34.  I’m wearing a size 0.

Pants

Everlane Wide Leg Cropped Pants

These are honestly the most flattering pants I own.  I will definitely be using this sale to snatch up a black pair.

They come in 6 colors and regular or ankle length.  I am wearing a size 0, ankle.

There is a bit of stretch to them, so they’re super comfortable.  They also come in a straight leg and a slim leg.

Every pair is on sale for $54.

Tops

Everlane Silk Top

This silk button-down is a must.  I’m wearing an XS.  It’s incredibly hard to find 100% silk for under $100.

It’s currently on sale for $73.

T-shirts are the reason I sought out Everlane in the first place and I’m loyal to them to this day.

My current favorite is their oversized v-neck.  I own it in black and white (XS) and am wearing in the above photo with my linen blazer.

Currently on sale for $21.

Shoes

Everlane makes so many great shoes (try these loafers), but my favorite during this sale are these boots.

I included them in my Weekend Packing List round-up because they are super versatile and comfortable.  The block heel gives you some height without compromising comfort.

They come in 3 colors and are currently on sale for $176.
