Top 5 Favorites – March 2020

April 8, 2020

Your Top 5 Favorites from March 2020 were all about cozy work from home essentials and taking advantage of great online sales.

Top 5 Favorites – March

1.Moisturizer– I first shared this moisturized in my Sunday Series because I scored it for 25% off.  It has a cult following (Victoria Beckham is one of its earliest fans).  You’re instructed to use it and nothing else for 27 days.  By the end, your skin is supposed to be totally transformed.

I’m on day 18 and I can definitely say my skin is glorious.  Super moisturized and plump feeling.  Zero irritations.  Stay tuned for a full review once I complete 27 days!

2. Gold chain necklace – this was also something I scored on sale and you guys loved it.  The chunky, choker vibe is edgy yet versatile.  I pair mine with this one, and together they make SUCH a statement.

This one is currently 40% off and the other is almost sold out.  Get them before they’re gone!

3. Joggers – my loungewear review was by far the most popular post in March.  Who isn’t living in sweatpants right now?  My exact pair is sold out, but this print is the same style and these are the non-cropped version.  I adore how substantial and cozy the fabric is.  Worth every penny!

4. 90’s jeans – while I’m not wearing jeans during quarantine, I pounced on these because they went on sale.  They are high rise, loose fit and super chic.  Pair them with cropped or front tuck tees and sneakers for an it-girl vibe.

I also love the darker wash.

5.Wide leg cropped pants – I’ve owned these pants for years and talk about them ad nauseum.  For good reason too.  They flatter EVERY body type, are priced right ($72) and come in 6 colors and 2 lengths.

They went on sale so I snagged them in black.  Check out their counterparts: this straight leg pair and this slim leg pair.

Your Top 5 Favorites – October 2019

November 1, 2019

Everlane Wide Leg Cropped Pants

Your September favorites were all about beauty, but your October favorites were all about fashion!

I actually have 6 products to share with you this month because two were a tie.

Here’s what you loved in October
1) Concealer – I shared this life-changing concealer on my Sunday Series and you must have heard the passion in my voice because it was hands down an October favorite.  It’s super moisturizing, buildable and doesn’t cake or crease.  What more could you ask for?  It also comes in 30 colors so you’re bound to find the perfect shade match.
2) Ruffle sweater – I’ve been wearing this sweater on repeat and you love it just as much as I do.  A Nuuly find that I ended up purchasing, it’s sold out, but this one is almost an exact replica.  Also check out this one under $35 and this one.
3) Wide Leg Cropped Pants – seriously the most flattering pants I own.  If you’re pear or apple shaped, they minimize the widest parts of your body for an ultra flattering silhouette.  The fabric has a bit of stretch and they come in 6 colors and 2 lengths.  Plus, they’re available in sizes 00 – 16.
4) Plaid dress – this was the winner of my first Nuuly box thanks to its awesome silhouette.  The fabric is so comfortable and can be dressed up or down.  Paired with sandals in warmer temps and ankle boots in cooler temps, this baby is a year-round winner.
5) Floral midi dress – you guys loved my final look of NYFW.  Since that dress is no longer available, I found this one under $60.  It has the same floral print, bell sleeves and midi length.  Such a steal for $59!
6) Leopard joggers – these cozy joggers tied with the floral midi dress.  They’re amazingly comfortable, run TTS and have a flattering fit.  Unfortunately, after a couple hours of wear they already started pilling.  The care instructions said they are hand wash only, so that should have been my first clue.  The reviews online are stellar, so maybe you’ll have better luck than I did.

The Wardrobe Item You Need to Transition from Summer to Fall

Well, it’s been a minute!

Life has been pretty crazy lately (in the best way) and I’m sorry to say it’s affected the consistency of my posting.  I have tons of great content on the horizon and promise to get you back up to speed in a timely manner.

Stay tuned for your Top 5 Faves from July, an update on a local event I co-hosted, what I’m coveting for fall, and how I’m preparing for New York Fashion Week.

Today I wanted to talk about transition pieces.  In Socal we don’t get much of a fall, but we do get chilly mornings that turn into warm afternoons.

Enter the denim jacket.

No matter where you live, this is one of my favorite wardrobe items to transition from summer to fall.  Why?

  1. It can be dressed up or down.
  2. You can easily layer over or underneath it.
  3. There are tons of silhouettes available no matter what your style preference or body type – cropped, boyfriend, distressed – the list goes on.
  4. It breathes well.  No stifling feeling here.
  5. Denim is one of the most classic, versatile fabrics on the planet. It goes with everything.

I paired mine with a patch pocket skirt, my favorite summer sandals and a basic tee knotted at the waist.  To dress it down, I’d throw on a pair of tennis shoes (these or these) and to dress it up even more, I’d go with a silk slip dress and higher heels.

Shop the post below, including some great alternatives and what to pair with them.

3 High Quality, Affordable Brands You Need to Know

March 16, 2017

Most of what I feature on In Spades involves statement pieces and rare finds. They are what I gravitate towards most, and I’ll be the first to admit this strategy of getting dressed is a tad backwards. While most people start with good basics and build a wardrobe from there, I start with the craziest pieces I can find and fill in where necessary – it’s a top-down approach rather than a bottom-up philosophy. Consider me Rule Breaker Numero Uno of Michael Kors’ wardrobe philosophy.

“70 percent of the clothes you own should be meat and potatoes.
30 percent should be icing and fluff—that’s color, pattern, shine, and accessories.
Too many women get the proportions the other way round, then can’t figure out why they can’t get dressed.”

That said, I wanted to get down to brass tax: what the heck do I reach for when running errands, working from home or packing for a quick weekend away? You know, the basics.

While Target and Zara are great, I’ve reached a point in my life where quality trumps quantity every time. I’m not interested in replacing sweaters every three months. I’d much rather spend $100 on something that will last me 5 years than $20 on something that will last me 6 months.

Here are 3 High Quality, Affordable Brands You Need to Know

Everlane
If you consider yourself a fashionista, chances are you’ve heard of Everlane. Built around the philosophy of using ethical factories and transparent pricing, they are my go-to for t-shirts, sweaters and loafers.

The average piece of clothing is marked up 8x before reaching the consumer, but not at Everlane. They tell you exactly what it cost them to make your sweater and how much they’re going to charge you for it.

They also have a “Pay What You Want” program, which is as lovely and amazing as it sounds. You pick your price.

Brand Highlights
Vibe:
smart, savvy, fashion in-crowd
Hero pieces: t-shirts, cashmere sweaters and loafers
Price point: $16 – $365 with the majority of items under $100

Amour Vert
I teased Amour Vert during NYFW and if you haven’t yet checked out their line, now is the time. Committed to creating socially responsible fashion, they only manufacture in the US, have a zero-waste philosophy, use sustainable fabrics and non-toxic dyes.

What it means for you: eco-friendly clothing that will last.

Brand Highlights
Vibe:
girly and eco-friendly
Hero pieces: silk tops, cozy day dresses
Price point: $38 – $288 with most items averaging $120

Cuyana
Where Everlane leans practical and Amour Vert leans girly, Cuyana is like your sophisticated big sister.  They make incredible silks and leather goods in soft, feminine color palettes.  Think ladylike pieces that will carry you from the office to an evening out.

Their motto is “Fewer, Better” which embodies the spirit of having fewer clothes with better quality.  Also committed to sustainable fashion, their “lean shipping” option includes a reusable bag with pre-paid shipping label that you can fill up with your old clothes.  Once received, Cuyana donates them to women in need. You also get a $10 credit for your contribution to helping others.

Brand Highlights
Vibe:
clean and sophisticated
Hero pieces: silk separates and handbags
Price point: $35 – $495 with most items averaging $120
