Ultimate Summer Wardrobe Guide

July 29, 2020

Lisa Marie Fernandez x Target Lisa Marie Fernandez x TargetDress (similar below) // Hat // Bag (old Marc Jacobs, similar below) // Sunglasses // Sandals

Every summer I invest in a new little white dress.  See my picks from years past here and here.  There’s something equally easy and elevated about them.  Kind of like Diane Lane’s Positano dress in Under the Tuscan Sun.  Attention grabbing yet comfortable; breezy.

In the past couple months I’ve covered my favorite straw hats, summer sandals, swimwear and little white dresses.  I figure it’s time to round them all up for an ultimate summer wardrobe guide.

Think of a solid summer wardrobe like a capsule collection.  You just need a handful of key pieces to interchange.  Below are the items I can’t live without. I mix in quality tees, fun sunglasses and accessories, and use this blueprint as my core foundation.

Ultimate Summer Wardrobe Guide

Straw hat – tons of styles to choose from (fedora, floppy, bucket) but I prefer a boater for the most sun protection without being TOO big.  Bonus points if it has a tie to keep it from falling off on a windy day.

Little white dress – choose cotton or linen.  You need it to breathe and these two fabrics not only do that, but they transition from day to night better than anything else.

Dressy sandals – a block heel between 1-2 inches is best for versatility and comfort.  These Isabel Marant sandals are one of the best shoe purchases I’ve ever made.  If I had to salvage only 5 pairs from my closet, these would be on the list.  For a more affordable option, try these.

Pool/beach sandals that can get wet – I prefer a flatform, and never shy away from a sporty look, but if you want something more minimal, I like these.

Large handbag – choose something large enough to carry your life from day to night.  It also needs to be able to take a beating because sun, surf and sand are great for the soul but not for most fabrics.  Straw or nylon are great choices.

Denim cutoffs – I only wear 3 pairs (these, these and these).  They all go with EVERYTHING.  Enough said.

One-piece swimsuit – as a mom who chases a toddler and someone who loves to swim, I like a sporty but cute option.  A one-piece is best for this.

Bikini – always have a flirty bikini on rotation (better tan lines and your second option for when suit #1 is drying).

Personally, I don’t wear bathing suit cover-ups.  I think a rad pair of cutoffs or a breezy cotton dress work much better and serve a dual purpose.  Cover-ups just seem like more stuff to me.

Mix and match the above with other pieces in your wardrobe for the perfect summer capsule wardrobe.

Shopping Hacks: How to Get the Best Cyber Week & Black Friday Deals

November 21, 2017

2017 Shopping HacksMy favorite time of year is upon us – sale season! The week of Thanksgiving through the end of January marks the number one time to get the best deals of the year.

As many of you may have noticed, the sales have already started. No need to wait for Black Friday or Cyber Monday to save some serious cash. Today I’m sharing my Top 5 Tips for how to navigate the often overwhelming, stressful sale season.

Make sure your list is ready and read on!

1. Go to the mall and try on everything you’ve been eyeing to narrow down.

When the sales hit, pounce. This allows you to determine the correct size and fit, see the quality in person, and eliminate anything that doesn’t work ahead of time. No second-guessing, no over buying.

Shopping win: staying on budget and not hassling with returns.

2. Use the wish list feature on all your favorite retailers’ sites.

When the sales hit, simply click on your wish list to see what went on sale and start buying.

Shopping win: time saver. No fumbling around the web to see what went on sale or trying to remember who made that jacket you’ve been coveting. Everything is in one tidy place.

3. Buy now, price adjust later.

If something you’ve been eyeing is likely to sell out, just buy it now at full price and go back when the sales hit for a price adjustment. Make sure you only do this for places that honor price adjustments and/or have return policies.

  • Bonus tip: whenever possible, buy designer items from department stores or large online retailers. Most designer boutiques won’t price adjust, price match or return merchandise.

Shopping win: CYA; not losing out on popular items.

4. Befriend shop associates.

They have the inside scoop on what will go on sale and how much inventory is in stock. I have a shoe guy at Nordstrom that sets things aside for me and texts me photos so I can narrow down my list and not risk something selling out. Develop these relationships.

  • Bonus tip: develop these relationships at multiple locations to cover the most ground. Different stores have different merchandise so it’s always good to cover your bases.

Shopping win: these relationships will continue to serve you well throughout the year. It’s the gift that keeps on giving.

5. Cross reference prices via department stores.

For example, there’s a Vince sweater I want. I’ve added the sweater to my wish lists at Vince, Nordstrom, Shopbop and Net-a-porter. Because some retailers do tiered sales (20% off $250, 30% off $500, etc.) you could get a better deal somewhere else. Do your research.

  • Bonus tip: remember sales tax and rewards systems.  Bergdorf Goodman doesn’t charge sales tax to California residents so take advantage! This is especially key for higher priced items.
  • If you have a department store credit card like Nordstrom, for example, try to keep all your purchases in one place so you accrue points (like Nordstrom Notes), which can be used towards future purchases.

What to Buy in the Shopbop Sale

September 28, 2017

Shopbop’s sale launched yesterday and boy is it a good one!  You get 20% off purchases under $500 and 25% off purchases $500 or more.  It’s the perfect time to stock up on high quality fall staples that you’ll wear the entire season.  I’ve chosen 12 of my must-buys with reasons why they’ll make a great investment in your closet.

Simply click the images above to shop!  Be sure to act fast – I was already floored by the number of things that are sold out!

1. Oversized blazers are totally in for fall (remember my NYFW number?) and this charcoal grey plaid is super versatile and chic.

2. My favorite style of Mother denim – The Looker – is available in faux suede for fall. These are a must for casual and dressy events alike.

3. Everyone goes gaga over Stuart Weitzman OTK boots (they are pretty great) but I much prefer these beauties.  Not quite as tall (the super OTK versions make me think of RHONJ!) with a rubber sole, they are just as comfortable and better priced.

4.The Liya is my favorite Citizen style (be sure to size down one size) and the destroyed back hem is super on trend without going overboard.

5. Fair isle sweaters will be everywhere this fall.  The great news?  They will never go out of style.  Invest in high quality.

6. Every size of this handbag hits it out of the park.  My preference is the shoulder bag that can also be worn as a crossbody – a true win-win.

7. Brochu Walker makes some of the best knits around and this side tie turtleneck is cozy and chic.

8. Red is the color of the season.  A bold hue to pull off, I’m dipping my toes in (literally) with boots and small accessories rather than head-to-toe crimson.

9. A cylindrical bag with a removable faux fur sleeve?  Yes, please!

10. Velvet is another of fall’s biggest trends and this slipdress looks great alone or worn with an oversized blazer or cropped jacket.

11. I about died when I saw these slides – the kitschy illustration is too fun to pass up and the neutral colors will still allow for everyday wear.

12. Supple suede is one of the best reasons to get dressed during fall.  With an edgy moto silhouette this jacket will toughen up even the sweetest of looks.

Style Inspo: Interior Design with Homepolish

July 26, 2017

As a self-proclaimed style obsessive you would think I’d have every aspect of my aesthetic life down cold. I can style an outfit with my eyes closed. But when it comes to decorating my house, well, let me tell you a little story.

Two years ago my husband and I completed a massive home renovation. Throughout the process I chose not to hire an interior designer, so each and every detail fell to me. Tile, paint, fixtures, wood flooring, cabinetry, you name it, I chose it. By the time the process was complete, I was totally over having to make even One. More. Decision. Things like artwork, furniture and drapery became enormously daunting tasks.

In the two years since, I’ve managed to cobble together our living room and master bedroom (we needed a couch and a bed after all), but there is one area in our home still facing major neglect – the loft. Originally intended to be our home office, the space has nothing more than an area rug, green screen and a few light boxes. It needs help. It could be so much more than just a makeshift photo studio. As someone who works from home, it’s time for me to move my computer off the kitchen table and create a proper office. It’s been two years!

There comes a point in adulthood when you’re ready for things to stop looking and feeling like college. I no longer want to haphazardly acquire things and cross my fingers that they fit.

I need help.

I first learned about Homepolish from their amazing work with Rumi Neely and Leandra Medine. After viewing the stunning imagery of their home and office revamps I knew the Homepolish designers were my kind of people.

I promptly investigated to figure out how it all worked. First, you do a free in-home consultation with a designer. If you aren’t located in one of their 20 cities with brick and mortar offices, the consultation is done over video conference. After discussing your goals and mapping out a plan, you choose whether or not to hire the designer. If so, you pay an hourly rate.

In order to get our loft in beautiful, working order, I started to browse through the Homepolish archives for inspiration. Organized by room or style, I gravitated towards a contemporary glam aesthetic infused with eclectic elements.

If you’re a long time reader, you know that my personal style follows this same path. I lean towards contemporary pieces with a flair for the dramatic – voluminous silhouettes, exaggerated draping and mixed media. The copper chairs are the statement piece in the room but their neutral tone and structured shape give the space a cohesive and inviting flow.  Eclectic, yet functional.

Key Elements
While going through their archives I found several articles about what to consider when decorating a home office.  The key point that stood out was to create a space that inspires productivity and creativity.  A clean color palette seems like the best starting point; I don’t want to be distracted by a busy room.  I love the neutral, airy vibe of the above rooms.  Both are anchored with pop colors – hello sassy pink and striped coffee table (look familiar) – and use mirrors, plant life and interesting art to open up the space and inspire creativity.

Cohesive Style
Since our home is craftsman style I want to incorporate elements that will lend well to its cozy feel. This sitting nook is the perfect blend of traditional and modern with its built-in bookcases and crown molding on the light fixture. And how amazing are those powder blue velvet chairs?  They look incredibly lush and give the room that touch of feminine glam I’m going for.

Function
I’ve always wanted a vision board right above a huge work desk, so when I saw these images from fashion designer Rebecca Taylor’s office I was smitten.  I love the idea of refreshing the board every month with my latest whims, brainstorms and reflections.

Since our loft is on the small side, efficiently utilizing the space will be critical.  Floating shelves get things off the floor and out of drawers without taking up too large a footprint.  I love how they used floral wallpaper behind the shelves in Rebecca Taylor’s office and textured wallpaper in the second photo.

Now that I have my inspiration and vision in place, I’m excited to start working with a Homepolish designer. I think all style obsessives can relate to one common theme: we know what we like and we know what we don’t like.  The problem is having to sift through the myriad of choices on offer.  By working with a designer, I won’t have to stress about spending hours on furniture websites, returning things that don’t work and generally just spinning my wheels when I get stuck in a rut.  I’ll have someone to manage all of that for me while sticking to my budget and timeline.

Stay tuned in the months ahead for my office reveal. I can’t tell you how good it’s going to feel to finally have our office in working order!

If you’re in the midst of a remodel or considering a revamp, check out Homepolish for some major design inspo. And please share your journeys and questions with me! I’d love to hear what design choices you’re considering and how the process goes for you.

This post was created in partnership with Homepolish. All opinions are my own.
