How to Treat Cystic Acne So It Doesn’t Come Back

March 30, 2020

Cystic Acne Treatment

Ugh, cystic acne.  I hate it.

Sadly this is something I’ve battled off and on throughout my life.  Once I stopped nursing, it reached its all-time worst.  While my hormones readjusted to the new normal, I battled several painful, underground pimples on my chin each month.

If you’ve ever experienced cystic pimples, you know they take FOREVER to heal.  And even if they don’t break through to the surface, they still leave a mark.  Trying to lighten hyperpigmentation when you are constantly being hit with new pimples each month is a vicious cycle.

Thankfully I’ve found a skincare routine that has drastically reduced my cystic acne.  Some of the products are more recent finds – within the last couple months – so I’m excited to see what the longer-term benefits are (I’ve already seen amazing results).

How to Stop Cystic Acne

1) First, start with the right cleanser.  In a world of double-cleansing, it’s important to use a cleanser that won’t strip your pores.  If that happens, your pores overcompensate and produce more sebum, which makes cystic acne ten times worse.

I recently started using this one and love it.  It’s soap and sulfate-free so it won’t strip your skin.  It has alpha and beta hydroxy acids which are formulated specifically to remove impurities while plumping and toning the skin.

2) Immediately after cleansing, I use these acne eliminating pads.

They’re drenched in salicylic acid.  Forewarning, they burn.  I use one on my entire face, but you can spot-treat if you prefer.  To save money and get the most out of the product, you could cut them in half.  Just a half pad is big enough to do the trick.

The packaging says they can be used daily, but I only use them when I feel a pimple coming on.

3) Right after applying the acne eliminating pad, I dab on benzoyl peroxide just to the affected area.  I use one from my dermatologist, but this one is also great.

Pro Tip: you can purchase over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide up to 10%.  While you may think a higher concentration is better, it’s not.  Stick to between 2% – 5% benzoyl peroxide. The reason? 10% is extremely drying and your pores will overcompensate and produce more oil.  You’ll just make the situation worse.

This one is 2.5%.  The one from my dermatologist is 5%.

4) I use this mud mask for maintenance.

It draws bacteria out of your pores, then tightens and shrinks them.  You can actually feel your face get a “lift” after you wash it off.  It’s incredible and I’ve been using it for years.

5) These pimple patches are my favorite.  They tend to work best if a pimple has broken through to the surface, but you can use them at the beginning stages of a cystic pimple too.

Tons of companies make these types of pimple patches, but this one is by far the best.  For the record, I don’t like Zit Sticka.  The consistency is weird – it has prongs on one side that actually poke into your skin and kind of hurt.  It doesn’t stay on for more than a couple hours without sliding off and I didn’t find them to be effective for cystic pimples.

6) If you just need to cover a cystic pimple, this concealer is life changing.

Formulated with shea and mango seed butter, it’s super nourishing.  It won’t stick to dry skin, cake or flake.  It also doesn’t sink into your pores and make them look more pronounced like thicker concealers do.

It’s 25% off right now and comes in 30 shades.

Pro Tip: choose a shade with a yellow undertone.  When covering pimples, you need a yellow-toned concealer to reduce redness.  Even if you have ZERO yellow undertones in your skin, trust me, go with yellow.

If you are nervous about this choice, mix it with your true match concealer.

7) Ice your face.

It’s literally that simple.  Every morning and evening, I put three ice cubes in a washcloth and press it to the affected area for 5-10min.  This helps reduce inflammation (and ward off pain).

Fashion Friday

March 27, 2020

The State of Retail Amid CoronavirusCandid photo from a simpler time. Light test during a shoot downtown when grabbing a coffee and randomly running into 2 friends was the norm (both happened right after this shot).

So where do we go from here?  This is a question I’ve been asking myself a lot lately.  In terms of my family (Will all of my family stay healthy?  Will my daughter get to start preschool in the fall?).  And in terms of my passions (What will happen to the business of fashion?).

Today’s Fashion Friday is dedicated to the business of fashion and what’s going to happen to the economy.

The Business of Fashion

Fashion employs 1 in 6 people.  That’s more than agriculture; more than defense.

We all have to get dressed each day.  And we all pay taxes.  So while there are clearly more important parts of the Coronavirus pandemic to focus on, the business of retail and the state of the economy affects us all.

Consumer Behavior

After tragic events, consumers usually follow a path.  The first phase is the cocoon phase.  All purchases are frozen.  Then we move into what economists call Secular Immortality.  We become keenly aware of our own mortality and begin emotional/bored shopping.

“You only live once.”

And retailers need this stimulus.  It’s not just small businesses that are suffering.  Large corporations are feeling the squeeze too.

Companies like JC Penney, The Gap, Victoria’s Secret (the list goes on) who are already in financial trouble, will be greatly impacted.  It may be their final nail in the coffin.

What we need to understand is that this isn’t just going to be a blip and affect 2020’s sales.  This will affect generations.  We won’t see recovery for years.

The way we consume will change even more

With brick & mortar stores closed indefinitely, retailers will need to find new ways to reach consumers.  They can no longer offer 1:1 personalized customer service.  Can this be achieved in an online chat?  Perhaps.

I’m interested in what Indie designers are doing.  Several of them have begun archive sales.  This means they are making past collections (previously unavailable for purchase) available.

As a collector, this is especially intriguing.  I now have a second chance to snag the one that got away.

Clothing Rental Services

I’ve written about my experience with Nuuly, and while I loved it, I’m sorry to say these services are now moot.  No one has anywhere to go.  We can’t leave the house.  Events have been canceled.  Do people really need to rent business or special occasion attire right now?  No.

So what happens to companies like Rent the Runway and Nuuly?  Will they survive?

How will this affect luxury?

I’ve talked before about Amazon’s push into luxury by offering a concession model to designer brands.  While their 10-year pursuit into luxury has always been rebuffed, the Coronavirus may be the linchpin that changes the game.

Take Chanel for example.  You cannot purchase Chanel RTW or accessories online.  You must shop in-store or through an online consigner like The RealReal.

With no shelter-in-place end date in sight, Chanel may have to use a concession model via Amazon in order to keep sales moving.

Once we do rebound, don’t expect luxury purchases to be flashy.  Those that can afford it will opt for “quiet luxury”.  Think minimalistic, non-logoed pieces.  Luxury brands like Gucci may see a temporary decline in sales while brands like The Row and Deveaux may soar.

I’d keep your eye on China.  As the biggest consumer of luxury, their consumer actions will be telling.  Since they were also the first country to be affected by the Coronavirus, they will also be the first to come out of it.  Their rebound behavior will likely dictate the luxury market’s success (or failure).

The Bottom Line

This affects us all.  And not just us, but the generations behind us.  Support local business and indie designers where you can.  If not monetarily, then through word-of-mouth endorsements, support on social media (follow, like, comment), etc.

And remember that we’re all in this together.  This too shall pass.

Loungewear Review: 3 Brands I’m Loving

March 25, 2020

Twenty Montreal JoggersTwenty Montreal JoggersTwenty Montreal JoggersTwenty Montreal joggers (cropped version sold out) // Naadam cashmere hoodie (on sale)
P448 sneakers (similar) // Understated Leather jacket (similar) // Gucci sunglasses

I saw a hilarious Tweet.

“To the people wearing jeans during self-quarantine: What are you trying to prove?”

My sentiments exactly.

Loungewear has been on my sartorial to-do list for a couple months now, so I was prepared for the comfy WFH outfit routine.

My quest?  Joggers.

I wanted a pair of sweatpants that are comfortable.  Eco-friendly.  And look chic enough to be worn outside the house.

Mission accomplished.

After testing a handful of brands, here is what I found.

Loungewear Reviews
Twenty Montreal

I adore this brand.  They describe their clothes as luxury meets comfort.  And that’s truly what they make.  These joggers were a great sale find and I’ve already exceeded their cost-per-wear.

I love that they have pockets.  I love that they are cropped (great for long torsoed women).  They are true substantial cotton sweatpants.  The print is edgy yet versatile enough to wear “out” and still make you feel cool and put together.

I will be purchasing these trouser joggers next for an even more elevated look.

I am wearing a Small, but could have gone down to an XS.

Ninety Percent

Ninety Percent uses 100% organic cotton and their pieces are SO cozy.  I ordered a pair of these joggers in black and adored them, but since I scored the above pair at 60% off, I kept the cheaper of the two.

At the time, I was thinking I only needed one pair of joggers, but now… well, let’s just say my tune has changed.

They are true, thick cotton sweatpants.

I ordered an XS in their joggers so I’d say they run TTS.  If you are between sizes, size down.

Lunya

Lunya’s MO is actually sleepwear, but sleepwear, loungewear, same difference.

I own these leggings and they are a dream.  The material is a cozy cotton/silk blend AND they have pockets.  A huge plus in my book.  I also tried these leggings which look almost identical, but the fabric is different.  And I don’t recommend them.  They felt crunchy and sandpapery to me, despite the majority of people giving them rave reviews.  Maybe if I would have washed them they would have softened up, but at $98 they needed to be perfect straight out of the gate.

If you are in the market for a pair of leggings that are not workout pants, definitely give these a go.

If you want to stick to joggers, try these.

I have an XS and would say they run TTS.  Forewarning, the lighter colors are pretty transparent in the bum.  So if you wear polka dot undies underneath them, be prepared for everyone to see.

Other Brands

Below are some other sweatpants I’ve tried and my reviews for each.

Nike and Champion both make some great options, but I’ve found the styles to be very hit or miss and the sizing to be all over the place.

The One That Got Away

The One That Got Away

If you follow me on Instagram, you know I had a small accident on Thursday night.  My daughter and I were playing and I got a bad scratch on my eyeball, eek!  Not to worry, I’ll be totally fine.  But I had to eliminate screentime for about 48 hours and thus my Fashion Friday got delayed.

Rather than chat about the business of fashion (it’s at a standstill thanks to COVID-19), I chose to chat about something uplifting!

I’ve been wanting to start a new series on the blog and “The One That Got Away” has been in my head for at least 5 years.  While the production of it will continuously evolve – what’s in my head isn’t meeting what’s coming out – today I’m sharing the first episode.

The One That Got Away

This series was born out of those diamond in the rough pieces we found while shopping, but for whatever reason didn’t purchase, and regret that decision to this day.

I’ve been shopping since age 5, so I have a TON of these stories.

About 12 years ago I was doing my weekly round at Nordstrom Rack when I saw it.

Black.  Leather.  Floor length.

It was the trench coat of my dreams.  Leather so buttery soft, it practically melted in my hands.  As a huge fan of The Matrix, this coat channeled Trinity like no other.  I HAD to have it.

Sure enough, as soon as I slipped it on in the dressing room, I almost fainted.  It fit like a glove.  The waistline nipped in perfectly, the sleeves ruched in the coolest way, the collar could be worn popped up for extra badassery, and the length was perfect.  It skimmed the floor in a way that was made for me to float from room to room.  It almost made me look like I was walking on water.

Walking on water.

If all of this weren’t enough, the next part really tipped it over the edge.

It was Rick Owens.

If you are unacquainted with said master, you should know that black and leather are his thing.  No one does it better.

This trench coat basically descended from the heavens into my hands.  Then I looked at the price.

$999.

It’s important for me to first share the original retail price – $8500.  With tax, this coat retailed for almost $10,000.  And here it was, hanging in front of me at almost 90% off.

I panicked.

Palms sweating, I started to run numbers in my head.  How could I make this work?  Put it on a credit card?  The coat was more than my rent.

At this time in my life, my budget was very different.  This coat would equal my clothing allowance for the YEAR.

I just couldn’t do it.  So I passed.

I still dream about this trench coat.  Did I make the right decision?  That’s arguable.

For a moment in time, I could have been Trinity from The Matrix.

The black leather Rick Owens trench coat… it was the one that got away.

What I’m Coveting

March 18, 2020

Frame Le Original jeans

So I’ll be the first to say it feels strange to share a What I’m Coveting post amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.  There is SO much to process right now.  My hope is that you will find an outlet here.  What I keep coming back to is that I started In Spades to story-tell through fashion and personal style.  I want to find the good in every day and for me, that means communicating through my love language – fashion.

On Monday I shared my thoughts on how we can support small businesses.  They need our help more than ever.

In today’s What I’m Coveting, I’m going to highlight the nationwide sales that are happening right now.

In light of all the brick & mortar closures, there are lots of promotions and deals to be had.  If you’ve been saving for something or need a closet refresh, now is a good time to help stimulate the economy.

Nordstrom – 25% off sitewide.  I’m investing in this face cream, these miracle eye masks and these SPF protecting hats for summer.

Everlane – $50 denim until Sunday.  Go for the super straight (adore the black wash and vintage cuffed pair).

Intermix – 40% off.  Go for the vintage band tees and their dress selection.  Tons of options for summer, from cotton daytime to fancy evenings.

Moda Operandi – 20% off with code STAYHOME.  Their stock of Ulla Johnson is HUGE and try this brand for summer dresses and bathing suits.

Need Supply – 25% off sitewide.  My hero pair of jeans is on sale, including these that I picked up for a different vibe.

Net-a-Porter – 15% off.  My fave mid-range denim brand and high-end denim brand are on sale, plus this dreamy dress brand I wear during NYFW.

Shopbop – go for silk skirts from this cool-girl brand and amazing sweater selection.
