The History of Fashion: Dapper Dan

June 12, 2020

Dapper Dan

I’m so excited to be back with you for Fashion Friday!

Last month I launched a new series called The History of Fashion.  The aim is to share in-depth information about a brand that you may not know and how that brand or designer has made a significant impact on the history of fashion.

Today’s subject is the legendary Dapper Dan.

Dapper Dan grew up in Harlem, New York.  His family didn’t have much money, but he credits his love for fashion to a time during childhood when they were able to buy him a pair of fancy loafers.  I love hearing about these pivotal moments when a person recognizes the transformative power of fashion.  It’s truly life-changing.

Dapper Dan, whose real name is Daniel Day, started a boutique in Harlem in the 1980s.  With no prior experience making garments, he was determined.  At the time he started his business, American manufacturing was being sent overseas (this is the birth of fast fashion).  Factories shut down overnight and Dapper Dan purchased their equipment at auctions.

Although he didn’t know how to use it, he asked questions; observed.  It was a modern day informational interview, done over and over again.  Dapper Dan calls his learning process “sciencing,” which I love.

His trademark is over-the-top leather and fur ensembles with one key element: luxury logos.  The catch?  He didn’t have permission to use them.

Dapper Dan would buy up all the luxury hardware on handbags, etc. at department stores and repurpose them in his creations.  He also invented a new way to silk screen onto leather, introducing the first instance of “logomania”.

His clothes were so eye-catching they caught the attention of celebrities and most prominently, hip hop artists.

What makes Dapper Dan so significant to the history of fashion is that he’s the designer that merged luxury fashion with hip hop culture.  The two entities didn’t intersect prior to Dapper Dan.  Kind of like a Banksy of the fashion world, he pushed boundaries and people took notice.

It wasn’t until Mike Tyson got into a fight outside of Dapper Dan’s boutique, and made world-wide news, that luxury brands caught on to what he was doing.  Predictably, the cease and desist orders and lawsuits started.  They would eventually be his demise.  Dapper Dan closed his boutique in the 90’s, after 10 years in business.

In 2017, the essence of Dapper Dan re-emerged in Gucci’s resort collection.  Alessandro Michele created a jacket that was almost an exact replica of a balloon-sleeved Louis Vuitton number Dan created for Olympian Diane Dixon in the 80s.  Gucci was promptly called out.

What transpired next is between Gucci and Dapper Dan, but by 2018 Dapper Dan opened a new boutique and debuted a men’s line with Gucci.

Dapper Dan changed the way the world got dressed.  I have his memoir queued up in my Audible for after I finish The Chiffon Trenches.

I wish I had more pictures to share, but they are all right’s managed, so I encourage you to read more about Dapper Dan, check out his website and his Instagram.

Top 5 Favorites – May 2020

June 10, 2020

With summer approaching, it’s no surprise your Top 5 Favorites from May were all about warm-weather essentials.

Here are your faves from May 2020

1) Straw hat

Janessa Leone Siro

I purchased this hat for it’s mega sun protection (the brim is over 5 inches wide) and happily found an alternative for $45.  The $45 version comes in black and white (I purchased the white) and has an adjustable inner band.  Awesome news if you have a small head like me!

If you saw my Instagram Stories I did a side-by-side comparison of the two.  Clearly the designer version is much sturdier since it’s hand-woven with substantial straw.  It won’t flip up in the wind and the stylish crown gives it that extra edge.

The $45 version isn’t as sturdy, but it’s lightweight and could be packed into a beach bag.

I love them both.  They each offer something different and am happy I have two colors of the same silhouette to choose from.

2, 3 and 4) Denim cutoffs

Denim Cutoffs

This post about my go-to denim cutoffs was hands down your favorite from May.  You can read the full breakdown of sizing information and the Pros and Cons of each pair here.

This high-rise pair was your favorite, followed by this classic pair, and finally this mid-rise pair.  These three styles are honestly the only denim shorts I will EVER buy.

Here is my breakdown depending on what you’re looking for:

Most Stylish
Most Comfortable
Most Versatile

5) Comfortable bra

Comfortable bras

With the amount of time we are spending at home, the name of the game is comfort.  I ordered some new bras and you guys loved this one.

The pads are removable and the straps are completely adjustable.  As someone who always has trouble adjusting straps to the right length, I was thrilled that this bra offers so much leeway.

Pro tip: insert the pads AFTER you’re already wearing the bra.  SO MUCH easier.

Below are my three favorite bras because they are all wire-free and SUPER comfortable.  Each offers a different level of support.  Here is the breakdown:

Least Support
Medium Support
Most Support

Life Lately

June 8, 2020

Our world is changing.  I spent the past week listening, learning, researching and absorbing as much information as I could.  It was eye opening and emotional.  The great thing about education and listening is that it’s a life-long journey.  It never stops.  While I will continue to communicate here and on social through my love language, fashion, please know that civil rights, equality for ALL, and kindness have been and will continue to be of utmost importance to me.  My view of the future remains bright.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the stories we tell.  Do your clothes tell a story?  Mine certainly do.  As a collector, the inspiration for a piece is so fascinating to me.  Everything in my closet has a backstory; a visceral memory.  In a way, it’s like a tangible diary.  As Bill Cunningham said, “Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.”

Here are some new stories I’ve discovered.  They each have their own unique message and super stylish products.

Recent Discoveries

Pangaia

I recently discovered this brand and am in love with their commitment to sustainability.  Created by a team of scientists, technologists and designers, they use bio-based, recycled fibers and natural botanical dyes to make their clothing.

The meaning of their name is a combo of “Pan” (all-inclusive, especially in relation to the whole of a continent, racial group or religion
) and “Gaia” (Mother Earth).

I just ordered this cropped t-shirt and this basic t-shirt in orchid purple, flamingo pink and jade green.  They are launching an ocean blue collection of tees, shorts and hoodies that drops tomorrow at 10am PT.

Year & Day

This ceramics company has a minimalist and modern aesthetic that I adore.  A friend gifted me this candle in Daybreak and I loved it so much, I burned through it in less than a month.  Once you use the candle, the ceramic pot can be used as a flower vase, coffee mug, pencil holder, you name it!  I just ordered Midnight for a smokey scent reminiscent to summer bonfires.

Ciate London Nail Cheat Sheets

How fun are these nail cheat sheets?  The protection eyes sold me, but the geometric shapes and leopard print spots are so fun too.  I will definitely be rocking these the minute they arrive!

Target Designer Collaboration June 2020

If you missed the launch day of Target’s new designer collaboration, there is still time to snag some amazing summer dresses from 3 fabulous designers.  I bought this cotton dress in white (I own the main line version in black) and love the neon color-blocking of this slip dress.  Check out this puff sleeve tiered dress for something that can easily be dressed up or down.

Life Lately

June 1, 2020

While not much time has passed since my last Life Lately post, a lot has happened.

I have spent a lot of time reflecting on what I want to say about the recent tragedies in our country and I’m still having trouble articulating what’s in my head and in my heart.

What I do know is that education is paramount.  Education about how to help our black communities: how to uplift them, how to support them and how to educate ourselves and our children about what they endure.  The way forward needs love, understanding and voices behind it.

Fashion is my love language.  My voice.  The best way I know how to start communicating is through my love language.

To start, I want to share four black fashion designers and the work they’re doing.  While this just barely scratches the surface of the black designers in the fashion community, but I wanted to start with these four because they are all New-York based, and I’ve had the pleasure of seeing their work firsthand.

Please send me your favorite black fashion designers so I can share their designs here.

LaQuan Smith

LaQuan Smith

LaQuan Smith

Perhaps the most well-known designer in today’s post, LaQuan Smith creates clothes you wear when you want to make an entrance.  His clients include some of the world’s biggest celebrities: Beyonce, Rihanna, Cardi B.

He launched his label at only 21 years old and worked so hard to make it what it is today.  I love this quote about his journey (as told to Vogue):

“Before 2010 I was doing things a nontraditional way. I was wearing my own designs, promoting myself, sneaking into Fashion Week parties, and doing these random things just to get some form of acknowledgment. There was a lot of just grinding, networking. I became friends with a lot of different girls, and I was making their outfits just in a casual way. Through that, I formed relationships and gained clients. It was about trying to get as many people interested as I could so I could get to somewhere greater.”

The above photo is from LaQuan Smith’s S/S18 collection which I had the pleasure of attending during NYFW.  Held in the Beacon School’s gymnasium, Brooklyn Tech’s Lady Dragons opened the show with a step routine (you can see them performing in the background).  Models sat on desks and posed with basketballs.  A film buff, Smith said he wanted to create a film-like atmosphere reminiscent of movies about high school to epitomize the feeling of being young and free.

Check out more of LaQuan Smith’s work on his website and Instagram.

Washington Roberts

Washington RobertsWashington Roberts

Washington Roberts learned to sew at the age of five.  Although he would go on to study chemical engineering, fashion was always in his DNA.  After honing his skills at Vera Wang and Tory Burch, he launched his first collection in 2011 and hasn’t looked back since.

Known for pristine tailoring and vibrant prints, his clothes turn heads and make you smile.  He designs menswear, womenswear and accessories.  I adore these geometric jacquard pants from his most recent collection.  Talk about a statement!

The above photo is from Washington Roberts’ S/S15 collection.  It holds a special place in my heart because this is the very first NYFW show I EVER attended.

Check out more of Washington Roberts’ work on his website and Instagram.

Negris Lebrum

Negris Lebrum

Negris Lebrum is a multifaceted designer.  He creates womenswear, handbags and cosmetics.  I’ve attended two of his NYFW shows over the years and his clothes always have a sophisticated and timeless flair.

His brand motto is “aime par beaucoup, admiree par tous, elegance percu,” which translates to “Loved by many, admired by all, elegance perceived.”

Passionate about social responsibility, Negris gives back to various social, cultural and educational projects.

Check out more of Negris Lebrum’s work on his website and Instagram.

Terese Sydonna

Terese Sydonna

Terese SydonnaTerese Sydonna is brand designed for the superhero in all of us.  I couldn’t love that motto more.  I was actually introduced to Terese through a mutual friend and think her vibrant print kimonos are so striking.  They are a perfect balance between artistic expression and comfort, an element she strives for in all her designs.

In the COVID-19 pandemic, Terese has begun designing facemasks.  For every two masks purchased, the designer donates one to a healthcare worker.

Check out more of Terese Sydonna’s work on her website and Instagram.

Fashion Friday

May 29, 2020

Revamping the fashion calendarThe old fashion calendar. Pre-Collina Strada F/W18. I’m 7 months pregnant waiting for the runway to start.

In last week’s Fashion Friday we talked about what I dubbed The Jerry Maguire Manifesto of the fashion world.  It calls for a revamp to the fashion calendar.  Instead of moving at light speed and producing 6 collections per year, designers would just produce two.

Gucci is the first brand to confirm their participation.  Saint Laurent will also release collections on “their own calendar” forgoing traditional fashion weeks.

What does this mean?

It’s starting.

Many fashion journalists have argued that a revamp to the fashion world has been in the making for several years.  Unfortunately, it took a global pandemic to tip the scale.

Because Gucci and Saint Laurent are part of a fashion conglomerate (Kering), this is a significant development.  Hopefully it will create a trickle-down effect and other conglomerate brands and indie designers will follow suit.

The benefits of a slowdown are plentiful.  Less impact on the environment, less importance placed on “consume, consume, consume” and more time for designers to actually… design.

But how will consumers respond to this slowdown?  Will the lack of fresh inventory cause consumers to lose interest and subsequently hurt brands?  If it isn’t “new” will it be less appealing to the consumer?

This quote epitomizes my take on the situation.

“Just as a Picasso painting is not thrown away because it’s old, why should a fashion design be discarded after one or two seasons?  The product is an expression of the creative soul, just as it is for an artist.”

— Alessandro Maria Ferreri (CEO of The Style Gate)

The fashion die-hards understand.  We’ll adjust.  The fast-fashion brands will scramble.  With fewer collections to copy, what will they produce?  Fashion Nova, one of the largest fast-fashion companies around, produces 1000 new styles per week.  Per week.

With the big fashion houses slowing down, will the rest of the fashion world follow suit?

One can only hope.
