Viktor&Rolf coutureViktor & Rolf couture F/W20

This week the world’s top fashion designers showed their couture collections.  Before we get into how different the shows were this season, let’s break down this oft misunderstood category.

What is Haute Couture?

Alexandre Vauthier coutureAlexandre Vauthier couture F/W20

Haute couture translates to “high dressmaking”. It’s made-to-order clothing for a specific client – a very wealthy one. There are stringent standards a design house must follow to classify as a haute couture.  Namely, their clients must visit their atelier for private fittings and they must employ 15 fulltime staff as well as 20 fulltime technical workers.  These are the people that make the clothes by hand.  Their craft is passed down, generation to generation, and highly specific.  They truly are some of the most skilled artisans in the world.  Couture gowns can take over 1000 hours to create, all by hand!

In the documentary Dior and I, a haute couture client almost derailed Raf Simons’ first show for the brand.  The show took place in Paris, but a New York client needed a fitting and took priority.  When you buy couture, a seamstress from the house is assigned to you.  Talk about customer service.

It was crazy to see this seamstress jet between Paris and New York and arrive hours before the show walked the runway.  In the film you see her rush in to put the finishing touches on gowns while Raf looks on, incredibly relieved.  Truly extraordinary.

Chanel coutureChanel couture F/W20. Regarded as a success and Virginie Viard’s first homage to Karl rather than Coco.

Speaking of Dior, they won haute couture F/W 2020.

Due to the pandemic, designers got creative on how they showcased their collections.  Some just did sketches, a la Schiaparelli, others showed teaser films with promises of full collections later in the month (Valentino, Margiela).

Japanese designer Yuima Nakazato reworked classic white shirts, donated by 25 acquaintances, into one-of-a-kind garments.

But Dior created miniature versions of the real thing, presented to private clients in massive trunk.  Can you image receiving one of these?!  A socialite I follow, Elena Perminova, (read her story, it’s incredible) surely received one. All I kept thinking is that her daughter is going to have the most LEGIT Barbie clothes in the history of the universe.

The collection was shot in a fairytale esque film.  Although stunning, it lacked diversity.  Not one person of color was included in the cast.

Why is Couture Important?

Haute couture is the top tier of fashion.  Without it, designers wouldn’t be pushed to create masterpieces.  This painstaking work, with its beauty, detail and monumental effort, is paramount to continuation of the craft.

Everything we buy as “average consumers” is inspired by couture.  It’s a trickledown effect of the designer’s highest vision. Like the famous “cerulean blue” speech in The Devil Wears Prada, eventually, it affects us all.

The Future of Fashion Week

This season’s move to digital was hit and miss.  As Tim Blanks expertly expressed in his article for BoF, the power of a live runway show will never be paralleled.

“A fashion show can be something so profoundly ceremonial that it attains the peculiar power of an occult ritual.”
– Tim Blanks

I will never forget the first fashion show I attended.  There is an otherworldly magic to it.  Clothes are meant to be worn.  To see them move on the body, how they change a person and the mood they create… that’s true magic.

While the future of the fashion show doesn’t remain bright in the pandemic, I’m confident this stalwart will return to us.  It’s the only way to truly see a designer’s innermost visions come to life.

What I’m Coveting: Pool Attire

July 8, 2020

Pool attire

This past weekend was GLORIOUS so naturally I have pool time on the brain.

I saw these shorts and fell in love.  They remind me of something out of a Slim Aarons’ photo.

Pool Attire I’m Coveting

Sexy bikini top and high waisted bottoms – bathing suits are not my favorite, but a chic, black bikini is a forever classic.  I love the wrap top (can be tied so many different ways!) and the high waisted bottoms for coverage.

Hat with ties – after scoring this hat, I pretty much want every hat I buy from here on out to have ties.  It’s helpful if it’s windy or if you’re playing in the pool with a toddler.

Mermaid floatie – I mean, how cute is this?

Tote bag – this cushiony fabric stole my heart.  Love the vibrant blue for summer.  Bonus points – it’s waterproof!

Puka shell necklace – these shells are HUGE and remind me of a very expensive JW Anderson chain link choker I had my heart set on.  This one is much cheaper and you can adjust the length.

White one piece – any one piece with a belt screams “mod” and I’m here for it.  Love the ribbed texture of this one.

Massive sun hat – pool time needs a good dramatic moment and this hat does the trick (while also being functional).

Tevas – you need waterproof shoes at the pool and these are not only on trend, but super comfy and give you added height.  Win-win-win.

One-shoulder one piece – this asymmetrical double one-shoulder is so posh.  Sign me up!

Mykonos book – if I can’t travel, you better believe I want to look at gorgeous beach pictures while I sit poolside.

Beaded bracelet – loving the throwback vibe of this bracelet.

Pool shorts – the piece that inspired this post, I just can’t get enough of these!

Favorite cutoffs – I’ve written about these before.  Get them before they sell out.  They are truly the best denim cutoffs ever!

Top 5 Favorites – June 2020

July 6, 2020

I hope you all had a great 4th of July weekend.  We are officially in the heart of summer!  Your Top 5 Favorites from June 2020 were a mix of oldies but goodies and new products I tried.

Nail art cheat sheets

Ciate London nail art cheat sheetsThese nail art stickers are SO fun.  They instantly take your manicure up a notch and the price is right.  You get over 400 stickers for $18 and the quality is superb.  They seriously look like salon quality nail art.

Read my full review for how to apply them and other tips here.

Little white dress

Lisa Marie Fernandez x Target dressThis LWD is perfect for summer.  It reminds me of Diane Lane’s Positano dress from Under the Tuscan Sun.  Chic, comfortable and versatile.  Although it’s part of a limited edition collaboration, it’s remarkably still available in every size.

I’m wearing an XS and can attest that the quality is top notch.  Double lined cotton, removable belt and priced right at $60.

Most Comfortable Bra EVER

This is the only bra you’ll ever wear.  Trust me.  It has totally adjustable straps (I hate bras that only give partial strap adjustment) and removable cups so you can choose how much support you want.

I wear an XS and own it in black, pink and nude.  It runs TTS.  Get it before it sells out – most retailers can’t keep it in stock.

Lounge leggings

This has been one of my most popular posts of 2020 because it’s all about loungewear.  These leggings were one of your favorites from June.

They have pockets and are made of the softest material ever that does NOT pill.  I have an XS and think they run TTS.

Pro tip: this brand makes an IDENTICAL pair of leggings with a different material that I do not recommend at all (scratchy, uncomfortable).  Be sure you get these for the softest, coziest pair ever.

Designer Sale Picks Under $200

While I don’t have just one item that you loved most from June, this post was by far the most popular.  I chose my favorite pieces under $200 from the Moda Operandi sale.

You loved this dress, these jeans (also on sale in black) and this top among many others.  All are still in stock in a range of sizes.

There are still lots of gems available so be sure to jump on it while you have the chance.  I scored another dress from one of my favorite designers at 70% off.

Current in stock favorites below.

Pink Givenchy loafersHappy, Fashion Friday!

Earlier this week I talked about how I’m coveting a pair of platform sneakers.  This got me thinking about the world of sneakerheads (avid sneaker collectors known to go to extreme lengths for their hobby). With the highly coveted drop of Dior x Air Jordan this week, I’m curious…

What Lengths Will You Go To For Fashion?

Would you camp out for an exclusive drop like the Dior x Jordan fans?  Spend more than you normally would for a collector’s item?

If you haven’t seen this documentary about sneakerheads you must watch it.  SO fascinating.

What is Happening with The Gap?

My fondest memories of The Gap are the commercials from the 90s (hello, Depeche Mode), their Long & Lean jeans (they made EVERYONE’s legs look amazing) and the fact that I spent my first ever paycheck on a baby blue corduroy jacket from The Gap.

The struggling retailer announced this week that Kanye West will be coming on as a long-term creative partner.  Yeezy x The Gap will debut in 2021.  Will this strategy save the brand?  When asked why The Gap, Kanye said he wanted to bring his design prowess “to the masses”.

Oy.

What do you think of celebrity designers?

Suzy Menkes steps down from Vogue

When I started In Spades I fancied myself a fashion journalist.  I desperately wanted to convey the educational side of fashion – the interworkings of a collection, what makes a designer tick and how this form of artistic expression is so much more than mere necessity.

One of the stalwarts of the industry, someone I greatly revere, Suzy Menkes, has stepped down from Vogue.  I had the pleasure of seeing Suzy in person several times at NYFW.  With her signature bangs, she always carried herself with grace and her insight into the fashion world is unparalleled.

She spent almost 30 years at the International Herald Tribune before starting at Vogue.  Her interviews with designers always drew out their idiosyncrasies in beautiful ways, highlighting just how much work goes into creating multiple collections per year.

When such an influential contributor steps down, it’s important to honor their work.  The fashion world certainly benefitted from Suzy’s intellect.  I hope this won’t be the last we hear from her.

May you all have a happy holiday weekend!

Sneaker Roundup: The Best Affordable to Designer Styles

July 1, 2020

I can’t lie.  I’ve been coveting a pair of platform sneakers.  Maybe it’s pandemic fashion (comfort is key) or the fact that my beloved Adidas x Stella McCartney sneakers have seen better days, but I have sneakers on the brain.

I love sneakers because they are SO versatile.  From function to fashion, they serve every sartorial need.

This week the long-anticipated Dior x Jordan Brand collab dropped.  People entered a lottery for a chance to purchase a pair of hand-painted $2,200 Air Jordan 1s.

Fun fact: Check out this Jeff Goldblum documentary about the underground world of sneakerheads to see just how fanatical this sartorial group is.

All this fanfare got me thinking about the sneakers I currently own.  Below is a round-up of my favorite sneakers from affordable to designer and the pros and cons of each.

Converse

Converse sneakersThe ultimate classic sneaker.  These date back to the early 1900’s. (Converse Chuck Taylors were the official shoe of the US military!)  They look good on everyone and will NEVER go out of style.

Pros: affordable; timeless; fun collaboration styles

Cons: not much support; white canvas gets dirty/fades easily

Sizing: TTS, although I sized down a half-size in my low top Chuck Taylors.

Vans

Vans sliponsFrom skaters to beach kids, these sneakers have a fiercely loyal following and I too, adore them.

Pros: affordable; cool, edgy vibe; classic slip-on style is easy to wear (socks or not); progressive company that offers a ton of limited edition collabs

Cons: take a while to break in

Sizing: TTS; size down if you are in between sizes.

Bucketfeet

Bucketfeet sneakersThese were my go-to shoes during pregnancy b/c they are SO comfortable. I even wore them home from the hospital.

My sister introduced me to this brand over 5 years ago and I love their brand mission.  They create classic slip-ons and lace-ups, but commission indie artists from around the world to design them.  Anyone can submit a design!

Pros: affordable; SUPER comfortable thanks to the “massaging bubbles” at the base of the insole; fresh styles constantly available

Cons: none!

Sizing: TTS; size down if you are in between sizes.

P448

P448 SneakersThink of P448 as the more affordable, yet still designer alternative to Golden Goose.  I love these lowtops; they zip up so you never have to lace them.

Pros: mid-range price with designer-level style; can ALWAYS find them on sale

Cons: more expensive than most sneakers; the styles aren’t as sophisticated as Golden Goose

Sizing: Size up.  I’m usually a 36 or 36.5 and I got a 37 in these.

Golden Goose

Golden Goose Superstar SneakersI’ve written before on whether Golden Goose are worth it.  In a word, absolutely.  They are the most stylish of the bunch.  I truly believe you can wear them with anything.

Pros: SUPER versatile; sophisticated style; highest quality; durable

Cons: expensive; can scream “blogger uniform” (invest in what pulls at your heartstrings, NOT what you “think” you should wear)

Sizing: TTS.  They do NOT come in half sizes so size down if you are in between sizes.
