Skull + Sequins

June 26, 2017

W Concept  skirt // Zara men’s t-shirt // Stuart Weitzman heels // Quay sunglasses

Anytime I can infuse a bit of an edge into my overall look, I’m game, so when this sequins skirt from my favorite underground shopping site went on sale, you know I didn’t hesitate.  The two-toned color palette and side slits lend more editorial than NYE party, which I wholeheartedly endorse.  You better believe I’ll be wearing it to summer parties and even during the daytime with silver brogues and an oversized light sweater (bonus points for being able to easily transition to fall!).

I get a lot of questions about these strappy sandals and wanted to pass on a more affordable version.  While I highly recommend the real deal for their superior construction and soft, comfortable leather, this pair is a steal at under $80.

With it being summer, my sunglasses game is on heavy rotation.  These babies are a beautiful $50 alternative to the super popular Audrey Celine frames.  The oversized cat eye is so flattering on any face shape and the matte black color is a nice alternative to the shiny finish we’re used to seeing on frames.

Finally, one of my favorite things to do while shopping is to take a cruise through the men’s section.  It’s a great way to infuse some inspiration and variety into your wardrobe especially when you feel like you’ve seen the same things online and at the mall over and over again.  This tee was part of the men’s section at Zara, and I was immediately drawn to it’s Alexander McQueen reminiscent skull.  When I touched the sequins and found they changed colors, I was immediately sold.  I love the versatility and how it appears to have been made for this skirt.

How do you incorporate edgy pieces into your wardrobe?

Polka Dots for Summer

June 19, 2017

Vocabulary boutique dress // YSL handbag (under $70 version here) //
Jimmy Choo pumps, sold out (under $50 version here)

With summer in full swing, my signature denim hasn’t been getting as much rotation.  The past two weekends in Southern California have been picture perfect beach days, so I’ve been reaching more for dresses and skirts. Get ready to start seeing a lot of these feminine silhouettes (with an edge, of course) in the weeks to come!

First up is this chic polka dot number from Vocabulary.  A classic pattern reinvented for today, I about died when I first saw it on Cecelia.  Flirty, feminine and chic, it honestly looks exactly like an Alaïa but it’s under $100.  The knit fabric makes it perfect for daytime with sandals and a straw bag, and because it’s a substantial weight, it can easily transition to night with some heels and a bold lip.

For this OOTD, I opted for the nighttime route and paired it with my go-to handbag (check below for an under $70 version) and delicate ankle-tie pumps.  Twirling my way through a bougainvillea lined street, it made me feel like Diane Lane in Under the Tuscan Sun going off to meet Paolo.  Lucky for me, my Italian man is just behind the camera.  Can’t you just picture it walking the seaside streets of Cinque Terre?!

San Diego ladies and gents, stay tuned for some fabulous summer events in the works with Vocabulary.  Last year we hosted an epic pool party, and this year we’re not to be outdone!  Mark your calendars for a quintessential San Diego experience in mid-August.  There will be yummy sips + bites, a shopping experience like no other, and of course, fab company.  Be sure to check back for more details coming soon!

Heels on Fire

June 13, 2017

There are certain items of clothing you see for the first time and immediately know they are meant to be yours.  No trying on, no second guessing, just an overwhelming feeling of “this has to be mine!”

When I first saw this vintage inspired t-shirt I actually squealed with glee.  My love of shoes knows no bounds and the tee personifies this feeling in cute font to boot.  Total no brainer.  Of course it had to be paired with shoes worthy of the title, and these Balenciaga babies fit the bill.  With a heel that appears to actually be on fire, I couldn’t have paired this outfit better if I’d tried.

Now days my jeans are just about all cropped or ankle bone length.  It makes me wonder how I ever dealt with skinny jeans that used to pool up around the ankles!  The wide leg vibe works well with my body type and is oh-so-flattering with block heeled shoes and mules.  All in all, this ended up becoming one of my favorite casual outfits for summer.  I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve already worn it.

Shop my picks for vintage inspired t-shirts and some more affordable pointed toe mule options below!

Designer Collaborations: Two Sides of the Coin

June 5, 2017

Victoria Beckham for Target shirtdress // Vintage Levi’s // Amelie Pichard mules (under $25 version here)

Shop the Post

I’m a big fan of designer collaborations.  For me, it dates all the way back to January 2006 when Target introduced a collection by Luella Bartley.  At the time, I was still building my wardrobe and on a limited budget, so collaborations were a godsend.  While H&M, J. Crew and countless others have followed suit, I am still fiercely devoted to Target’s lines.  When they announced that Victoria Beckham was next on the list, I eagerly marked my calendar for the release.

I ended up purchasing this flowy striped shirtdress (on sale for less than $25!) plus three other pieces.  Rather that styling it the traditional way – buttoned up as a dress – I opted for some beat up vintage Levi’s and quirky patent orange mules I’d had my eye on since last year.  The effect is a tad 70’s and I love it.

I go through a bit of a ritual with designer collabs.  First, I obsessively stalk all media releases so I can bookmark the pieces I want to acquire.  Next, I call my mom.  Being in different states, we map out a plan.  Since she is two time zones ahead of me, she gets the early jump on our list and I fill in whatever she wasn’t able to get.  Since different stores carry different items, this has really allowed us to cover all bases.  Plus, our gab sessions over our hauls at the end are so much fun.

There is a unique camaraderie that surrounds waiting in line for designers collabs.  I’ll never forget queuing up for Phillip Lim x Target.  I made friends with the ladies around me and was able to score this Alexander Wang handbag off one of them for an insane deal.  Cecelia and I promptly ended a joint event at Vocabulary to rush over for the Lily Pulitzer launch.  She walked away with palm tree print lounge pants and I scored a gold and ivory serving platter.

During Isabel Marant x H&M, me and my linemate had a 5am gab session of every collab they had done since inception.  She had collected something from each one, with the photos to prove it (my favorites where her Margiela pieces).

There is, of course, another side to this coin.  During the height of these crazed frenzies (think Missoni for Target and Balmain for H&M) the question of whether or not the designers are doing those who own original pieces a disservice by creating a low end replica always comes up.  Personally, while I will always support designer collabs, I can see both sides.  The undercurrent of fashion has always been about one thing: exclusivity.  How would you feel if you had the money to buy Balmain jackets on the regular, and suddenly they become available to the masses?  Granted, the fabric quality and construction of an original versus a replica is unparalleled, but you get the gist.

I still revel in the fact that I was (I think) the first person to be photographed in this top.  It was fun knowing I was one of few who owned it and saw its potential from the get-go (Beyonce even went on to wear it!).  While it was never a part of a designer collaboration, it followed the same model by inspiring over a dozen copycats and appearing on the Instagram feeds of thousands of other fashion bloggers.  I think it’s great that so many people love the top as much as I do.  I also take pride in what The Social Network emphasized: getting there first is everything.

Finally, there is the question of how often you’ll actually wear these pieces.  Though few and far between, I for one, am definitely guilty of buying something just for the sake of being able to say I have a piece of so-and-so’s limited edition collection.  Hello, Rodarte x Target dress I have never worn.

What do you think about designer collaborations?  How often do you wear your pieces?

Summer Ready

May 30, 2017

Mimi & Red sundress // Straw hat (similar here) // Illesteva sunglasses // Kendra Scott ring //
Leather sandals // Bag (similar here)

This past weekend I was in Chicago for one of the most epic Greek weddings I’ve ever attended.  Between fits of laughter and happy tears, we ate Greek food, broke plates, took ouzo shots, threw dollar bills at the bride and groom and even managed to (accidentally) shatter a chandelier.  We Greeks are animated.

The end of the weekend brought a beautiful feeling of goodwill and love for the happy couple, and ushered in one of my favorite times of year: summer in California.

While I’m more of a fall/winter dresser, it’s imperative to have chic, easy pieces when the temperature rises.  This Mimi & Red sundress was the perfect piece to kick off summer.  I love the wrap front – it looks so pretty billowing in the wind – nipped waistline and open back.  It kept me cool yet stylish for a stroll on the beach and I know it will be on heavy rotation in the months to come.

No summer wardrobe is complete without a straw hat and this one is a steal for less than $30.  My handbag is from several years ago, but I love how it embodies all of the current trends – beadwork, embroidery and a bamboo top handle.  If you’ve had your eye on a Gucci one like I have, go to the Shop the Post section below for some great alternatives at a fraction of the cost.
