The Best Leather Leggings

Southern California had me all excited.  We actually experienced about a week’s worth of “winter” weather.  Naturally, I broke out my hats, coats, sweaters and boots and basked in the sartorial glory.  And then it promptly went back to sunny and 78 degrees.

Whaaa-whaa.

For that glorious week of being able to dress in my winter finery, I started thinking about a short list of winter staples.  For years I’ve been searching for the perfect pair of leather leggings.  I’ve tried a ton of different styles and finally found the holy grail.

Before I get into the winner, here’s a list of options at various price points (and what I really think of them).

Spanx Faux Leather Leggings

Clocking in under $100 and with almost 2200 reviews, you know these leggings have passed muster. Women love how real the faux leather looks, how the high waist sucks in your tummy and how unbelievably comfortable they are.

My take?  I really dislike them.

When I tried them on, I was fully expecting to love them based on the glowing reviews, but to me, they’re just fancy workout pants.  Personally, I would feel so awkward wearing anything but tennis shoes with these leggings.  No aspect of their aesthetic resembles actual pants, so unless only a very small portion of them show (i.e. the space around your knees) you’re going to look like you’re ready to go work out.  Pairing them with heels or ankle boots just seems crazy to me.

David Lerner Faux Leather Leggings

These, on the other hand, were the best faux leather leggings I found.  Only $55 more than the Spanx, they actually resemble pants.  Thus they look great with stilettos, boots and flats alike thanks to the substantial fabric and true pant hem.  Their high waist sucks in your tummy like a great pair of high rise jeans only way more comfortably.

The online reviews of these leggings are just okay, which totally surprised me.  They are hands down 5 stars in my book.  If you’re looking for an affordable pair of leather leggings, I highly recommend these babies for comfort, style and price.

All Saints Faux Leather Leggings

These babies are currently 50% off (under $100).  If you love the edgy, rocker vibe a la Anine Bing but not the price point, then these could be a great option for you.

I found them to run quite small (size up one to two sizes!) but love that they look like actual pants.  The faux leather has more of a rubbery quality compared to others I tried, but they are fully lined and have a comfortable elastic waistband.

I wish the waistband were higher for a more flattering fit.  If you are a curvy lady or have an abundant derrière like me, the lower rise waist made me feel like I had to constantly pull them up in the back.  In other words, not something that felt practical for long-term wear.  However, if you have an athletic build or are long and lean, definitely check out these leggings.

The Winner: Helmut Lang Leather Leggings

Full disclosure: these leggings are an investment.  I got mine on Black Friday for over 60% off (still marveling at my fabulous score).

What I love about these leggings – beyond the fact that they look like actual pants – is how freaking comfortable they are.  The elastic waistband molds to your body to make them feel like workout pants, while on the outside they are smooth as butter.  Perfectly placed seams at the knees (something all the other styles lack) ensures easy movement, optimal comfort and no bunching.

They aren’t super heavy, so there’s no feeling restricted or weighed down.  I’ve worn mine on long road trips, airplanes and sightseeing/walking long distances.

Thanks to the illusion fly and back slit “pockets” they look sharp as hell.  In other words, a highly appropriate wardrobe choice no matter what the occasion (no yoga butt here).

If you’re looking for a pair of high quality, comfortable leather leggings that will last you decades, these are it.  I highly recommend favoriting these babies on your fave retailers’ websites so you can jump on them when they go back on sale.

Do you have a favorite pair of leather leggings?  Let me know in the comments!

Gold Footprint Necklace

January 21, 2019

Marrow Fine Small Disco Diamond PendantI’m a sentimental person by nature.  Whether it’s cards, letters or even movie stubs, I save everything with a special memory attached.  I’m especially connected to clothing and jewelry (no surprise there).  With Marie Kondo’s Netflix show sweeping the nation, the question of whether something sparks joy is pretty laughable when it comes to my closet and jewelry box.

No occasion has made me more sentimental than the birth of our daughter.  When she came into our lives I collected anything that bore her resemblance – initial necklaces, t-shirts, you name it, I bought it.  While I love all of the ready-made pieces I acquired, I knew nothing would come close to something created specifically in her image.  A custom piece was essential.

Marrow Fine Small Disco Diamond Pendant

When it comes to capturing sentimental moments in gorgeous packages, I knew I had to contact Marrow Fine.  You may remember Jillian from our Vogue-style Q&A interview and the gorgeous Montana sunstone ring she created with my grandmother’s diamond.

Beyond her stunning rings, she also has a full line of necklaces, earrings and bracelets.  I’d been wanting to add a necklace to my collection and her disco diamond pendant was the perfect fit.  To personalize it, she created a mold of my daughter’s footprint and cast it inside the disc.  I’m so happy with the way it turned out and have been layering it and wearing it solo almost every day since I got it.

Marrow Fine Small Disco Diamond Pendant

For someone who places a ton of emotion into clothing and accessories, this piece is truly like wearing my heart on my sleeve.  I’ve been doing that since the day my daughter was born, and this just makes it all the more special.  I can’t wait to pass this down to her someday.

Jillian engraved my daughter’s moniker on the back side of the pendant.  It’s so dainty.  It almost feels like a secret feature.  I love that I can switch it up and wear it either way depending on my mood.

Jewelry is already so personal, but this pendant truly is one of a kind.

Special thanks to Jillian and all the Marrow Babes (can’t forget Hot Dad) for their creative magic.

Faux Leather Worth Coveting

If you’ve been reading In Spades for a while, you know I’m addicted to leather.  I’ve shared my favorite leather jackets under $500, the most insane leather jacket of all time, and the comfiest leather pants.

But let’s step away from the real McCoy and talk about vegan leather.  Whether you refer to it as faux, vegan or pleather, there are some amazing animal-friendly options out there at great price points.

This vegan leather wrap dress is from one of my favorite indie brands, Low Classic.  You may remember them via my army green trenchcoat and color block heels.  The wrap skirt is super flattering on all body types and I love the long sleeves for winter.  Even though it’s faux, you can see how supple it looks in the sunlight.

I’ve linked some great faux leather pieces under $200 below.  If you’re looking for a wardrobe update, try faux patent or a vibrant hue to shake things up.  I’m loving this pink trench coat – it will carry you through spring and bonus points for matching Pantone’s Color of the Year!

I accessorized the look with a custom gold pendant (more on that later this week) and my favorite warm smokey eye palette.  To toughen up the dress, I finished it off with white combat boots.  Such a great alternative from classic black!  All products linked below!

2019: The Year of the Overhaul

Happy New Year readers!  I hope 2019 has started off well for all of you.

At the start of the new year, I took a much needed break from Instagram.  While I wish I would have refrained from the app altogether, I did pop on to see what others were up to.  What I saw overwhelmed me.  Messages of total life overhauls, aggressive fitness routines and proclamations of lengthy, super specific goals were made.  If that was you, rock on.  More power to you.

But for me, it prompted an overwhelming feeling of SLOW DOWN.  It made me want to reflect on the many blessings in my life right now – not get all uppity about what I’m lacking or have yet to accomplish.

I talked about my 2019 goals and what I hope is in store for me this year.  If you missed the post, I want to add more value back into your lives.  So please let me know via email, social media or in the comments what you’d like to see more of.  Style tips?  Closet overhauls?  Videos?  Let me know!

One of my first major shares of 2019 will be NYFW in February.  This season team In Spades is doing things a little differently.  I talked previously about sharing my reflections on how much NYFW has changed since we first started attending.  Why is this important?  Well, beyond some truth bombs and gossipy tidbits I have to share, it shows how the world of fashion blogging has affected a multi-billion dollar industry (an industry you rely on every day).  It shows how your buying habits are changing the way brands market to you.  Further, it means trends are dictated differently than they once were, which further fuels the cycle of consumerism.

If you geek out on fashion like I do, you won’t want to miss it. 🙂

C’est La Via 2018: My Goals Heading into 2019

And just like that, 2018 is coming to a close.

I’ll be publishing my last Holiday Gift Guide this week – a list of all my must-have beauty products – but this will be my last OOTD post for 2018.

Later this week we’ll be heading back to my hometown in the Midwest to spend Christmas with my family.  Being as though it’s our daughter’s first Christmas, I’m looking forward to unplugging and living the holiday through her eyes.

While I contemplated posting between Christmas and New Year’s, I thought better of it because I know most of you will be doing the same (unplugging).  I may post about the end of season clearance sales (let me know if you’d be interested!) since the deals will be so good.

My last OOTD of 2018 seems only fitting – a Vive La Resistance sweatshirt and plaid boss lady suit.  In other words, an outfit that conveys power and a great mantra heading into 2019.

2018 was SUCH an interesting year for me blogging-wise.  Obviously, the birth of our daughter caused me to be more reactionary than proactive (something I’m thankful for).  But despite the lessened hustle in my game, I was still fortunate to work with amazing brands, meet incredible peers, and experience new ventures in old routines (see NYFW S/S19).

As I move into 2019, my goal is to get back to that proactive approach and bring you more of what you want to see AND more of what I want to create.  Blogging is the most saturated it’s ever been, and I’d be lying if I said I find it easy to keep my focus clear amidst the noise.

So, if that means quality over quantity, so be it.  As I spend these next two weeks reflecting on what I want to create in 2019, please feel free to reach out to me – in the comments, via Instagram, Facebook or email – and share your thoughts.

Wishing you and your families the happiest holidays!
