I love a good sun dress moment especially when it’s a throwback.  I picked up this 90’s inspired floral sun dress from Vocabulary boutique.  If that sounds familiar, well, it should.  I’ve been shopping at Vocabulary since almost the start of In Spades.  Over the years I’ve had the great pleasure to become close friends with its owner, Cecelia.

Cecelia is one of those ‘light up the room’ people with boundless energy and a heart the size of Texas (even though she’s from Michigan). Some of my favorite Vocabulary moments can be found here, here and here.

This dress did just that for me.  I love that it can be edgy and sweet at the same time.  Paired with another local favorite – Dear Survivor earrings – and a platform tennis shoes, it’s the perfect casual summertime look

It would also look amazing with Chuck Taylors and a jean jacket, or dressed up with platform heels, a high pony and a straw clutch.

If you’ve been reading In Spades for a while, you know one of my favorite places to shop in San Diego is Vocabulary boutique.  Owned by my dear friend Cecelia, it’s expertly curated and offers clothing, accessories and home decor at super reasonable price points.  Plus, it’s just about the cutest boutique you ever did see, located in the heart of Little Italy.

Fall is all about layering, and I was feeling extra nostalgic for a crackling fireplace and a cup of hot cocoa – a regular fall ritual in my Midwestern hometown.  So this fair isle cardigan was the perfect cozy choice.  I’ve seen so many fabulous iterations on this print, and will definitely be adding more to my closet.

In addition to fireplaces and hot cocoa, I’m so excited to experience all the quintessential fall outings like pumpkin patches and apple picking now that I’m a mother.  This cute Mamacita au Naturale t-shirt made me grin with its sassy expression.

High waisted jeans aren’t going anywhere and are super flattering.  I opted for a medium wash pair with lace-up pointed toe boots to elevate the look just slightly.  Vocabulary has some great charcoal wash pairs of the blue ones I’m wearing above.  A great choice if you’re looking for something a little edgier.

Polka Dots for Summer

With summer in full swing, my signature denim hasn’t been getting as much rotation.  The past two weekends in Southern California have been picture perfect beach days, so I’ve been reaching more for dresses and skirts. Get ready to start seeing a lot of these feminine silhouettes (with an edge, of course) in the weeks to come!

First up is this chic polka dot number from Vocabulary.  A classic pattern reinvented for today, I about died when I first saw it on Cecelia.  Flirty, feminine and chic, it honestly looks exactly like an Alaïa but it’s under $100.  The knit fabric makes it perfect for daytime with sandals and a straw bag, and because it’s a substantial weight, it can easily transition to night with some heels and a bold lip.

For this OOTD, I opted for the nighttime route and paired it with my go-to handbag (check below for an under $70 version) and delicate ankle-tie pumps.  Twirling my way through a bougainvillea lined street, it made me feel like Diane Lane in Under the Tuscan Sun going off to meet Paolo.  Lucky for me, my Italian man is just behind the camera.  Can’t you just picture it walking the seaside streets of Cinque Terre?!
