NYFW S/S18 Day 1

September 18, 2017

Ahh, New York Fashion Week. Each season I try to envision what the experience will be like (Will it be as good as last year? Will I get to catch up with everyone? Will my outfits come together?) and each season my expectations are blown away. There is no way to anticipate the crazy, beautiful chaos that encompasses NYFW. You just have to let it do what it’s going to do.

We arrived in NY on Wednesday and were able to enjoy a delicious dinner with friends before the week officially began.

Pro tip: If you’re going to attend the entire week, arrive early. It’s so much nicer to ease into the chaos than to hit the ground running!

Shop the Post

Day One’s outfit came together at almost the last minute. Even though I had six weeks to prepare, I employed the “throw-everything-in-my-suitcase-and-pray” methodology when packing.

Pro tip: Plan your outfits in advance (obviously). I normally use an Excel spreadsheet to track each item including alternate pieces that can go with each look in case the weather changes or I just can’t take another minute in heels.

My ruffled skirt and “Clutch” tee caught the attention of street style photographers and I was floored to find out Fashion Illustrator Holly Nichols captured my look via pen and paper. Check out her beautiful illustration here.

Noon by Noor
Our first show on Thursday was Noon by Noor. Known for clean lines and sharp tailoring, the S/S18 collection was beyond gorgeous. Accented with shades of rose, crimson, sketchbook and ladybug prints, the collection was a great example of elevated everyday-wear.

I loved the Tyler Ellis boxy belt bags styled with several of the looks and how tops were worn half unbuttoned for a slouchy yet elegant feel. The brand excels at blending masculine and feminine (can you tell they’re one of my faves?) which was executed perfectly in their oversized tunics and voluminous trousers.

In a week where a lot of what you see is more style than function, Noon by Noor is always a great example of the type of clothes your super chic friend invests in. I had so many people DM me after seeing my Insta Story of the finale saying how they would wear every single piece. I completely agree.

From elevated separates at Noon, to gorgeous gowns at Tadashi we went!

Tadashi Shoji
Tadashi Shoji is always a mainstay I look forward to. We haven’t missed his show in years and when he took his final bow wearing something other than his signature pink pants I was floored! The collection proved to be just as exciting.

Inspired by a Golden State of Mind, his S/S18 woman took us on a journey from bohemian Malibu to the glittering streets of LA. Opening with a swath of colors – canary, jade, rose quartz – adorned with tassels and floral embroidered tulle, it was perhaps the most casual and carefree I’ve seen from Tadashi. But make no mistake. He expertly took us from soft, easy pieces to va-va-voom drama. It was his plan all along. A master draper that can manipulate the most delicate of fabrics – lace, chiffon and tulle – he closed the show with celestial embroidered gowns, the most stunning of which was finished with a cape. Garments fit for royalty and the dreamers among us indeed.

Snoopy & Belle in Fashion
After Tadashi we headed to a cocktail reception featuring Snoopy & Belle in Fashion. Yep, that’s right, Snoopy from the Peanuts cartoon and his little sister Belle. Snoopy has a longstanding relationship with the fashion industry. Every major designer from Oscar de la Renta to Toki Doki has created couture pieces for him. As someone who was obsessed with Snoopy as a child, this is kind of like my fashion dream come true. Think mini couture pieces made from the exact same fabrics of the legendary collections in which they originated on display while fashion’s elite mingle in the background. We had so much fun networking with people who were personal friends of the Schulz family as well as buyers and editors from fashion glossies around the world.

After Snoopy we headed 45min uptown to Saks Fifth Avenue for the grand re-opening of their legendary 3rd floor. It may have been NYFW first day euphoria, but as soon as we walked in I could tell something was off so I asked an associate if I had gotten the location wrong. Maybe the festivities were on the 4th floor?

“Oh darling, I’m so sorry but the party is tomorrow.”

In the words of Cher Horowitz, “I feel like such a bonehead!”

Pro tip: Don’t use an Excel spreadsheet to track your calendar. Use Google or Outlook like a normal person so you don’t miss shows and events!

After laughing off my stupidity, the hubby and I walked a few blocks and enjoyed a delicious Greek meal.

Join me tomorrow for my recap of NYFW S/S18 Day 2!

NYFW Prep with Bumble & Bumble

September 5, 2017

I can’t believe another season is upon us – NYFW is less than 24 hours away!  Although I still have outfits to finalize and packing to do, one aspect of my prepping routine has thankfully been underway for the past couple of weeks.  When it comes to health and beauty, I make sure to stick to a great exercise routine (gotta build stamina for those long days in heels!), get a facial so my skin is in order, and focus on getting my hair healthy for the week plus of constant heat styling its going to endure.

I’m a longtime fan of Bumble & Bumble products and when they debuted two new treatments in August, I knew the timing for my NYFW prep was perfect.  Aimed at “over stylers” like myself, their two new products include a protective repair fluid that can be used daily, and an overnight damage repair masque for more intense repair.

While You Sleep Overnight Damage Repair Masque
Two weeks ago I applied this masque to really kickstart my “get hair healthy” campaign.  The crazy part?  You apply it on dry hair.  I’ve never done that with a masque before so this simple difference immediately intrigued me.  After leaving it on overnight, wash out in the morning.

Pros:
– Smells amazing
– Instantly transformed my hair into that “I just got a haircut” feeling
– Split ends seemed to disappear
– Left my hair petal soft while still maintaining volume and fullness
– Doesn’t leave hair limp and lifeless like most repairing masques
– Works on any type of hair (straight, curly, coarse, over processed, color treated)

Cons:
– There are honestly zero cons to this product.  Check out the reviews on Sephora if you don’t believe me!

Save the Day Daytime Repair Fluid
Once the heavy lifting was done, I started using this after each shampoo/condition.  Its milky substance smells just as amazing as the masque and gets applied on the ends of hair to strengthen and repair past damage.

Pros:
– Lightweight formula that won’t weigh down hair
– Instantly revives frizzy/frayed ends by sealing the follicle
– Contains heat/UV protection perfect for heat styling and time spent outdoors

Cons:
– Again, I have nothing bad to say about this product!  The only thing I can think of is to emphasize that this isn’t a detangler but rather a protective serum.  So for those looking to detangle wet hair after shampooing, this will definitely help, but it’s not its primary function.

Beyond getting my hair healthy for NYFW, I also have an arsenal of products I rely on to keep my hair looking its best during the shows.  Since my hair is naturally very fine, I gravitate towards products that give me some oomph and volume.  Bumble & Bumble’s Surf line is my go-to for giving my hair exactly what it doesn’t have naturally – volume and texture.

The key to great hair is in the preparation.  Here is the list of products I’ll be packing in my suitcase for NYFW worthy hair.

Surf Shampoo and Conditioner
Straight out of the gate I get a little lift and soft texture which is sorely needed for the wavy style I want to achieve.

Before blow drying, I use their Surf Foam Spray to seal in texture.  It’s a great base for my curling wand to be able to “grip” my hair and really does wonders for holding the curl.  If you struggle with your hair falling flat 20min after styling like I do, this is the product for you.

After I’ve curled my hair I let it completely cool and then spray Dryspun Finish to seal the look.  What I love about this product is that you literally can’t overuse it.  No matter how much you spray, it won’t weigh your hair down.  It simply gives it a soft fullness.  Bonus points for how good it works on day old (or two) hair.  Need a little zhoosh?  Spray this on your roots and you’re good to go!  During NYFW there are definitely mornings where I simply don’t have the energy to touch my hair, so this product is a godsend.  I actually carry it in my bag – shhh.

Finally, Bumble & Bumble’s Pre-a-powder is what I need when I want to pull out the big guns of volume.  Shake it onto your roots and massage into your scalp for a gritty texture that leaves hair pliable and voluminous.  It works especially well when it’s humid outside and every other product seems to fall flat (literally).

Tomorrow we head out for the Big Apple and 7 days of crazy, chaotic inspiration.  Be sure to follow along on Instagram for behind the scenes footage, runway coverage and of course, some amazing street style.  See you in NY!

Modern Suiting for Fall

August 28, 2017

Express blazer // Club Monaco scuba tank (similar here) // Citizens of Humanity jeans // Gucci loafers
Illesteva sunglasses // Love Tatum Kali Wrap, Chloe choker and Gold Ribbon Chain Wrap

One of the biggest trends for fall 2017 is modern suiting.  As a big fan of menswear as womenswear, I am completely onboard and can’t wait to start incorporating this trend into my wardrobe.  For today’s look I kept things super basic with something we all have in our closets: a black blazer.  What I love about this look is that it’s acceptable and chic for just about every occasion: running errands, drinks with friends, networking and meetings.  To give it a bit of an edge, I layered several gold chains as chokers and lariats.

I picked up this Love Tatum Chloe choker at the Hotel Del pop-up event last month.  Not long after, Tatum introduced a new wrap necklace named after yours truly!  I’m so flattered and of course had to immediately start sporting my namesake piece.  Head over to Love Tatum for more gold and sliver options as well as her signature gemstone pieces.

As you think about modern suiting for fall, go bold.  This is not the season or the trend to be bashful.  Think velvet, florals, brocade, even sequins.  I especially have my eye out for two-piece tweed and houndstooth numbers, strong shoulders and anything I can wrap a corset or wide belt around.  If you’re a fan of red, you’re in luck.  Every shade on the spectrum from oxblood to scarlet is setting the fashion world on fire.

A huge bonus to this trend is that it looks great on women of all shapes, sizes and ages.  There truly is no limit.  Plus, it’s a trend that will age well.  What woman can’t use a fabulous suit?

Shop the pieces below for some fall suiting inspiration.

Killer Boots for Fall

August 21, 2017

C/MEO dress (similar here) // Berenik jacket (similar here)
Quay sunglasses // Haider Ackermann boots (under $60 version here)

Lately we’ve been treated to some cooler evenings in Southern California, which has completely ramped up my excitement for fall.  In case you couldn’t already tell, I’m a fall/winter girl through and through.  Yes, I love my California sunshine, but when it comes to getting dressed I would 100% rather wear a jacket and boots than a sundress and sandals.

Thankfully fall merchandise is slowly trickling into stores and my favorite online shops.  The question now becomes, how do I make my outfits weather appropriate during this transitional time?  My answer: killer boots.  I have long loved pairing boots with more summer inspired looks (i.e. shorts and dresses) and love the way they complete this simple summer shirtdress.  Worn with a light jacket layered over the top, the outfit works for warmer days and cooler nights alike.

Since it will be warm in SoCal for at least another month, transitional dressing is key.  Add sock booties (they’ll be a huge fall trend) and light jackets to your list of wardrobe staples.  Sock booties look great with skirts and dresses because the ankle is narrow and fits like a sock, thus no gaping like in a traditional ankle boot.  My Haider Ackermann boots are sold out, but a no heeled version is still available as well as some great affordable alternatives here, here and here.

For jackets look for light suede and leather – you can tell the difference between a spring jacket vs. a fall jacket in the lining (bonus points because they’ll all be on sale!) – trench coats, military jackets and denim as your go-tos.  Check out this versatile fleet jacket, this oversized denim number and this classic trench for great affordable options.

Blogger Movie Night

August 16, 2017

If you follow me on Instagram you know that I co-hosted a blogger movie night a couple of weeks ago with my friends Lisa and Sheree. The goal behind the event was to gather new and old friends for a night of networking and fun. In the blogging world it’s so easy to be friends with fellow bloggers from afar, but the time you actually get to spend bonding in person can be few and far between. What better way to support our fellow boss ladies than to bring everyone together for a movie night!

Lisa and I have been friends for years so you probably recognize her from past blog posts. An actress, writer and the blogger behind Pretty Little Shoppers, she was the brainchild for our movie night and the most gracious hostess. Sheree of Posh Classy Mom and I met over a year ago at a conference and she is the very definition of a woman who juggles it all while looking fabulous and supporting her fellow boss babes. We invited like-minded ladies and I was absolutely blown away by how smart, gracious and wonderful everyone was.

Of course the evening needed to be Instagram worthy, so we enlisted the help of some amazing sponsors to bring our ideas to life. Lemonade LA provided delicious salads, sandwiches, macaroons and their signature blood orange lemonade that we mixed with champagne to make Bellini’s. Lisa also baked gluten free desserts for all of the guests and let me tell you, they were amazing. I definitely ate one too many cookies.

Stella Rosa and Diama Rose provided the vino and bubbly and each person got to take home a mini bottle in their gift bags. BloomNation put us in touch with Playa Flowers who created all of the flower arrangements and donated mini succulents in gorgeous gold and white planters for each of our guests to take home.

No Blogger Movie Night would be complete without a candy bar and popcorn. If you’ve never tried LesserEvil popcorn you absolutely must. Totally organic and made with coconut oil, it’s so good and good for you. We also set up a candy bar filled with all of the classic go-to movie treats and SockerBit gummies. Let’s just say I was beyond excited that we all got to take individual SockerBit bags home with us too. Can you tell I have a sweet tooth?

In true blogger fashion we spent the majority of the evening talking shop, relating to each other’s experiences and then had fun taking photos and Polaroid’s in front of the photo booth. In the midst of all of our bonding we completely lost track of time and didn’t end up watching the movie! Thankfully The Devil Wears Prada is a classic we’ve all seen and I’m so glad we got to spend the time networking. I definitely walked away with a new group of friends am I’m so excited to co-host another event with Lisa and Sheree. Gotta keep this positivity going! Until next time!
