NYFW FW20 Day 1 OOTD

February 12, 2020

NYFW FW20 Street Style NYFW FW20 Street StyleRoksanda coat // Sandro top // Vintage Levi’s // Gucci sunglasses
Haider Ackerman boots // Bottega Veneta pouch

Okay, okay.  I know I didn’t actually get to attend NYFW this season, but I still wanted to share my looks.  Since my suitcase was packed and ready to go prior to having to cancel, it was only fair to let these beauties shine.

My goal for this season of NYFW was sustainability.  I wanted to reuse what was already in my closet.  So most of what I’m sharing is something you’ve seen before, but styled in a new way.

I did acquire a few new pieces as Christmas gifts or end-of-season sale scores, but 80% of what you see pays homage to sustainability.

First up is this amazing technicolor dream coat.  I’ve worn it to NYFW before, and it never disappoints.  Warm, great for layering, and such a statement, it was made for the street of NY.  When I first saw it debut in Roksanda’s collection 4 years ago I almost fainted.  The patchwork design and color choice made me so happy.  It’s a coat that makes my heart flutter.

I wanted to keep the rest of my outfit monochrome, so I paired this embellished denim top with my vintage Levi’s and black boots.  My new favorite handbag had to make an appearance too.

Band tee + Vintage Levi’s

February 10, 2020

What a weekend.

If you saw my Fashion Friday, you know we sadly had to cancel our trip to NYFW.  While I’m super happy with our decision to stay home (sick baby that needs love!), I’m anxiously watching the runway coverage from my couch.

It definitely stings not being able to see the magic in person, but I am super grateful to actually have the time to watch and catch up on all the coverage (something I’m never able to do in the moment).

Anytime I’m feeling bummed out, I like to put on an outfit that makes me feel strong.  There’s nothing like a leather jacket, killer boots and great denim to make you feel like a badass.  Not only is this look comfortable, but it’s a great outfit formula to come back to again and again.

Here are some tips for selecting the perfect band tee and vintage denim
  1. Vintage denim sizing will be totally different than the size you wear today.  Don’t look at the number on the tag.  Instead, know your measurements.  Need a quick guess if something will fit?  The length of your elbow to your wrist should fit inside the waistline of a pair of jeans.  It’s a rough estimate, but if this is way off, they likely won’t fit.
  2. Shop the men’s section.  This applies to both band tees and vintage denim.  Both have better fits and more options!
  3. For vintage Levi’s, always look at the tag on the back pocket.  Orange tabs signify more fashion-forward and experimental styles of the past.  You always want an orange tab!  And if you can find Levi’s with a capital “E” on the tab, they are pre-1971.  Get them!
  4. This brand is my favorite for band tees.  They are small-batch, reworked vintage garments, so there is a lot of history and love in them.  While more expensive, the construction and uniqueness of their pieces make them totally worth it.

Fashion Friday

February 7, 2020

My First NYFWToday’s Fashion Friday begins on a sad note.  I had to cancel my trip to NYFW.

While I’m very happy with my decision to stay home (I have a sick baby that needs caring for), I am really bummed that I will be missing my favorite time of year.

I’ve been attending NYFW every season (February and September) for the past 6 years.  The ritual has not only become something that I cherish, but it’s a part of my vernacular.  It’s in my DNA.  It’s what I do.  So to not have it, is well… sad.

Last year I wrote a post about how NYFW has changed over the years.  You can read it here.  While the fanfare and peacocking has evolved, the core message of the week has remained.  It’s about the clothes.  It’s about the creative expression of visual geniuses.  I just LOVE it.

I’ve said before that NYFW is a lot like summer camp.  You see the same friends, do the same traditions and make new, everlasting memories.  There’s a camaraderie and bond that is unparalleled.  THAT is what I will miss the most.  Experiencing beautiful chaos with my peers and digesting it together.

Not to worry.  I will still recap the shows.  It will just be from my couch.

I’ll still share what inspires me, confuses me and what street style makes my eyes light up.

I’ll still shoot and share all of my NYFW looks, even though they contain heavy winter coats.  Putting my outfits together for NYFW brings me so much joy.  I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Here are some of my favorite NYFW recaps from the last 6 years.

My first NYFW
The first NYFW designer I interviewed
The biggest show to date
NYFW Video Diary
Attending NYFW pregnant & the day the stars aligned
The first time my baby attended NYFW
The NYFW outfit that landed me in multiple magazines
Attending NYFW during 9/11
My fave NYFW outfit & the day I met Aimee Song

What was your favorite NYFW moment from over the years?

As always, thanks for following along!

What I’m Coveting

February 5, 2020

Women's SuitingLafayette 148 suit & leopard print mules (similar here) // Earrings (similar here) // Silk top (similar here)

If you saw my first Fashion Friday of 2020, you know we talked about minimalism.  We’re trending away from maximalism (logomania, I’m looking at you) and moving towards a more refined approach.

Personally, I love it.  I’m all about closet staples that stand the test of time.  Plus my personal style lends towards simplicity.  I always forget to accessorize and wear lipstick, hah!

Suiting, and menswear inspired looks, is one of the top trends moving into Spring 2020.  Hence, what I’m coveting at the moment is a great suit!

Thankfully suiting has evolved from boring office attire. I’m loving so many different styles right now.

First up, the Bermuda short suit.  Yep, it’s a bit out there, but how great does it look with knee high boots?  Or platform derby shoes like these babies.

Here are some Bermuda short suits I’m loving.

Wide leg and pleated pantsuits are also having a moment.  I love that they give the illusion of long legs and going into spring, a linen set would be amazing in a wide leg.

These are my current fave wide leg options.

Finally, I adore the quirky details.  Cargo pockets, nipped waistlines, off-beat prints.

Here are some of my faves.

Stay tuned for my NYFW looks starting on Saturday!  (They may or may not include some great suiting). 😉

My New Favorite Skirt

February 3, 2020

I don’t know about you, but I have the hardest time finding skirts.

I think it’s because I have short legs and a long torso, but finding the right silhouette and skirt length has always been a challenge for me.

Last year I experimented with clothing rental service Nuuly (read my review here) and found a skirt I adored.  It’s the one I’m wearing here but in this color.  I wore it a ton and almost purchased it (an option from the rental service).

The next month, I chose the dress version of this skirt.  After wearing it a ton and getting lots of compliments, I knew it was time.  The skirt needed to be added to my wardrobe.

I’m SO glad I purchased it.  It’s 100% cotton so you can wash it and runs TTS.  The longer length in the back provides the perfect amount of coverage, and it has an elastic waistband (super comfy).

I styled mine a la Parisian Chic with a striped sweater, black booties and a pop of red.  If you’re looking for a fun skirt that can easily transition day to night and from California winter to spring, this is it.  Right now it looks awesome with boots, but I know I’ll wear it a ton this summer with sandals too.
