Would I Still Wear That?

February 5, 2021

Let’s take a trip down memory lane and go back to January 2015.

What was I wearing six years ago?  And is it still relevant today?

Would I Still Wear That explores these questions.  Let’s dive in.

The Layers

White jeans in winter

I still love this look.  While my hats have transitioned to strong brims instead of floppy, the rest of the outfit tracks.  White jeans are becoming a winter staple as much as a springtime must.  I’ll admit I rarely wear mine, but I appreciate their appeal in a well-rounded closet.

The boots are Bottega Veneta.  It’s so interesting to me to see what Thomas Maier was doing for Bottega 6 years ago versus what Daniel Lee is doing now.  I got them on sale and they ended up being a tad small (and REALLY high) so I sold them.  But boy were they fun.

This post was originally about layering.  See my style tips for how to layer like a pro.

The Mop

Mop vest

This vest bore a tradition.  You can read about it here.

I still wear every piece of this look… minus the vest.  That’s not to say I don’t still love its ridiculous nature.  But it was a Zara find and my Zara days are over.

Velvet burnout Jimmy Choo’s, black jeans and a silk button-down?  I’d call those closet staples.

The Alien Boots

Lanvin alien bootsLanvin alien boots

This was one of my favorite shoots.  Not only did I love my outfit, but it was the perfect example of having one thing in mind and then going in the complete opposite direction.  You can read more about it here.

I still own this entire look.  I wear the jacket often.  The skirt and the shoes, not as much.

When I first saw these boots and handed them to the Nordstrom associate to ask for my size he said, “it takes a special person to appreciate these boots.”

Clearly it was a sign.

Levi's 501 skinny jeans

Jeans on sale for $82

In case you missed it, I shared your Top 5 Beauty Faves from December last week.  Each product is an underground hero of mine – I use them all daily or weekly.

In January the name of the game was denim and leggings.  That’s pretty much all I’m wearing too.  Let’s dive in to your January favorites.

Lounge Leggings

These leggings are the best of both worlds.  Comfortable enough to feel like sweats, but supportive enough to work out in.  They’re like Lululemon’s Align Pant but 10 times better because they don’t pill, don’t stretch out, don’t snag on things and come in fun colors.

I want the seafoam color next.

Workout Leggings

These leggings are my favorite to work out in.  Super supportive without feeling too tight.  I’ve tested every pair that Lululemon offers, and this fabric is the BEST.  It’s lightweight, breathes well and doesn’t stretch.  I don’t buy anything else for workouts.

Skinny jeans under $100

These are dubbed a skinny, but they are more of a slim straight leg.  Made from 100% cotton they have a super lived-in, vintage vibe.

With almost 200 reviews and a solid 5-stars, you know the fit is perfection.

They’re currently on sale for $82.

Barrel Jeans

This jean silhouette is so flattering.  I love mine (check them out here).

This wash is currently 70% off.  They come to $52!

Skinny Jeans

These skinny jeans are by one of my fave denim brands.  I wrote a full review on their denim here.

If you’re looking for a mid/high rise jean with stretch, these are the best.

They’re currently 60% off.

Fragrance Review: Byredo & Le Labo

February 1, 2021

Byredo Le Labo

I’ve written about how to find your signature scent (hint: it involves fragrance layering).  Today I wanted to share the fragrances I’m loving lately and the deets on two very popular fragrance lines.

Byredo vs. Le Labo

I’m a big fan of both Byredo and Le Labo.  Five years ago I think they were somewhat under the radar, but now they are both mainstream, and rightly so.

The biggest advantage to both of these lines is that their staying power is fantastic. These are not perfumes you have to reapply.  One application in the morning is all you need.

They are also made-to-order: they will not mix your bottle until you order it.  This of course ensures that the fragrance is as fresh as possible.  And let me tell you, it makes a difference.

Byredo

Gypsy Water and Mojave Ghost are the most popular, but I have to say, I’m not a fan of either.  Byredo’s strength is in their more unique scents.

My fave?  Super Cedar.

Notes:
Top: Rose Petals
Heart: Virginian Cedarwood
Base: Haitian Vetiver, Silk Musk

As someone who loves androgynous scents, this one is warm and evokes a confident presence.

I douse my car in it once a month and also spray it on the curtains in my living room.  Each morning when I open them, I’m reminded of this beautiful scent.

Byredo also makes a Night Veils collection.  These are pure perfume extract, i.e. more potent.  In 2016 they made a limited edition scent called Le Gant and it was my favorite fragrance OF ALL TIME.  I’m so sad I didn’t stock up.  The closest I’ve found to Le Gant, is Byredo’s Tobacco Mandarin.

Try one of their top-rated hair perfumes for the same scents at a fraction of the cost.

Le Labo

I love that you can personalize your bottle of Le Lebo.  You pick the name you want printed on the label.  Just a cool personal touch to remind you that this bottle is yours alone.

My favorite Le Labo scents are Santal 33 and Thé Noir 29.

Santal 33 notes:
Top: violet accord, cardamom.
Middle: iris, ambrox.
Base: cedarwood, leather, sandalwood.

Thé Noir 29 notes:
Top: bergamot, bay leaves, black tea, fig.
Middle: hay, tobacco.
Base: cedarwood, vetiver, musk.

Le Labo also makes perfume oils for those who want to perfume without alcohol.

Santal 33 is my current winner.  It’s the scent I wear the most and get compliments on it every time I wear it.

Fashion Friday

January 29, 2021

Haute Couture S/S21 walked this week and there is much to discuss!  Check out the highlights below.

Alber Elbaz Returns to Fashion

AZ Factory AZ Factory AZ Factory AZ Factory AZ Factory

Alber left the fashion world in 2015 seemingly without a trace.  Many thought he would reemerge at a major house, but he spent his time reflecting, connecting and creating far from the public eye.  For couture week he unveiled his new line, AZ Factory.

Meant to be a “dream factory” the clothes are made for women of the NOW.  Built as a capsule collection, each piece is meant to be mixed and matched and take you from day to night.  Kind of like Multiples from the 80s but way, way more chic.

I love that he created a sneaker as his sole shoe for the collection.  Crafted with a pointy toe, it’s a heel/sneaker hybrid for optimal versatility.

The scuba suit leash zippers on dresses were hatched for the independent woman – why should you need help getting dressed?  And the fabrics were created to hold you in and let you loose in all the right places.

I, for one, will be pre-ordering.

Kim Jones Debuts First Couture Collection for Fendi

Fendi S/S21 CoutureFendi S/S21 Couture

This was a hold-my-breath moment, and when I saw it walk, I breathed a sigh of relief.  While I didn’t love it, I felt Kim stayed true to the DNA of Fendi.  After the Matthew Williams for Givenchy botched debut, I was so afraid Karl’s work and the Fendi family legacy would be dragged.

Not the case here.  While it was mostly “fine” in my book, there were a few looks I loved.

Sadly the most notable moment of the show was probably Demi Moore’s new face. :S

The Valentino Shoes

Valentino S/S21 Couture Valentino S/S21 Couture Valentino S/S21 Couture Valentino S/S21 Couture

This collection was a super interesting choice for Pierpaolo.  If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I love Pierpaolo for Valentino.

Rather than the Roman drama we expect from him, he gave us a subdued (well, minus the shoes) collection.  While there were a few maximalist looks, the majority stayed true to clean lines, relaxed tailoring and layers upon layers a la Phoebe at Celine.

So, let’s talk about the shoes. Analysts have pointed out that during times of recession, the heels get higher.  We all need an escape.

While I will not be buying these – you know I only do a massive platform if it’s accompanied by a massive block heel – I did appreciate the apropos nature.

We are all ready for an epic escape.

Iris Van Herpen and Those Headpieces

Iris Van Herpen Iris Van Herpen

Iris Van Herpen always brings the wow factor with her sculptural works of art.  This season she worked with artist Casey Curran for the headpieces.  You must check out a close-up of these beauties by watching a video – they are absolutely incredible.

Top 5 Favorites – Beauty

January 28, 2021

I know, I know.  It’s almost the end of January.  Truth be told, I didn’t plan to share your December Top 5 Favorites because it’s typically a weird month with the holiday.  But your favorites ended up being rad beauty products that I mainly shared on Instagram, so I wanted to give them a bit more love here on the blog.

I’m dubbing these 5 beauty faves my ‘underground heroes’ because they quietly worked their way into my weekly routine.

Body Oil

When my beloved açai body oil stopped shipping to the US, I had to find something else.  Everything I tried was mediocre until I found this.

It has a light citrus scent and absorbs quickly with a velvety finish.  My skin stays hydrated and supple the entire day.  It’s awesome.

Foundation Base

This foundation base is made to reflect light.  It beautifully blurs away imperfections and makes your skin look so radiant.  Take a look at it here.

It can be worn on the face or body.  I’m wearing Rich, the lighter of the two shades.  P.S. It’s green beauty.

Mascara

I have been searching for the perfect mascara for literally 10 years.  I’ve tried it all.  Every time I think I’ve found a winner, I find something wrong after a month of use.

This mascara changed the game for me.  I have sensitive eyes and this is the only one that makes my lashes look great and doesn’t have me rubbing my eyes at the end of the day.

Lip Gloss

I bought this on a whim because it was highly reviewed and I needed something cheap to add to my cart to get free shipping.  It ended up being such a pleasant surprise.

It comes in a regular version and a milky version.  I have Fearless, a deep berry color.  Note that it’s sheer color, goes on like a gloss, but feels like a balm.  It’s the best hybrid of chapstick and lipstick that I’ve found.

The best part?  It’s NOT sticky at all.

Facial Steamer

If you want a spa treatment at home (who doesn’t during a pandemic?), get this steamer.

I was nervous about getting it because of the cost and some reviews said the water cap breaks easily.  I’ve been using it for 6 months and it’s still like brand new.  It’s very well made and absolutely worth the spend.

I use it after washing my face to open up my pores before putting on product, or while I’m doing a mask to increase the efficacy.

It’s now a beauty cabinet staple.
