The History of Fashion: Supermodels

April 9, 2021

Ah, the supermodel.  That elusive, otherworldly being that contributes so much to the world of fashion.  I’ve always had huge respect for fashion models and could talk about them forever, but today I want to focus on the most pivotal timeframe for models in fashion history – the mid-1980s to mid-1990s.

Why Was This Time so Pivotal for Models?

First, the mid-1980s birthed several big changes that shifted the way we consume fashion.  First, manufacturing moved overseas, marking the beginning of fast fashion.

Second, Bernard Arnault created the first fashion conglomerate in the late 80s.  Up until this point, luxury brands stood on their own.  Now they had major financial backing, R&D, multi-level product categories and revenue streams.

Third, the 80s were an age of excess.  Wealth and exuberance weren’t hidden – they were front and center.

These shifts widened the gap between luxury and high street AND made it okay – commonplace, even – to promote exclusivity and materialism.  With new lines of business thanks to licensing, the need for advertising grew exponentially.  And every new ad campaign needs a face…

The Key Players

With the state of the world in the dawn of a new era, it was only fitting this era have a face.  Or faces.  Three beautiful ones to be exact.

There are four people we can largely credit with the advent of the supermodel.  The term “supermodel” dates back as far as the 1940’s, but it didn’t become a household term until Christy, Linda and Naomi.

Steven Meisel was one of the first to cast models en masse – not one girl booked his jobs; several did.  Repeatedly casting the Trinity and other giants (Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Stephanie Seymour), a cadence emerged.  There was strength in numbers.

Gerald Marie, then President of Elite Model Management, also latched on to the idea of strength in numbers.  Repping each member of Trinity, he began to market them as a package deal.  If you wanted one, you had to book them all.  This tripled rates and sent a frenzy through the world of fashion – everyone wanted a piece of this exclusive group.

Perhaps the final nail in the fashion coffin, cementing the supermodel as an A-list celebrity, was Gianni Versace.  Versace was one of the first to sit celebrities front row and bridged pop culture with fashion.  He also paid huge bonuses to models for exclusivity rights – they walked his show and no one else’s – sending bidding wars through the fashion community.  Four-figure day rates became high five-figure day rates.  The supermodel’s status only grew.

All of these moments gave way to a perfect storm.  The supermodel of the mid-80s to mid-90s was unstoppable.  Lina Evangelista, the Chameleon, could rock any look or style.  Christy Turlington had an exotic yet ethnically ambiguous look that transcended genres.  Naomi Campbell was flawless in every way and could move – her walk is the most heralded in the industry. Cindy Crawford personified a healthy image – glowing, friendly, girl next door, that was perfect for commercial ad campaigns.

But the excess of the 80s gave way to minimalism and paring down in the 90s.  Thus marked the birth of the anti-model.

Kate Moss

Kate walked her first runway in 1990 for Gianni Versace.  Her short, ultra-thin frame and childlike features were in stark contrast to the likes of the Trinity.

The most beautiful moments for me are those years in which the Trinity and Kate intersect. There will never be another moment like it.  It’s irreplicable.  They were, in fact, all close friends and seeing footage of Kate, Naomi and Christy at one of John Galliano’s first shows is so moving.  Haunting really.

As I said in the beginning of this post, I could talk forever about supermodels.  But I’ll leave you with this.  Check out the documentary Catwalk for a trip down the most pivotal era in supermodel history.

Top 5 Favorites – March 2021

April 7, 2021

Top 5 Favorites March 2021Between Daylight Savings Time, spring break and warmer weather, March was action-packed.  I shared a ton of denim, as well as comfy lounge sets I’m loving… and you loved them too.

Here are your Top 5 Favorites from March 2021.

Floral Dress

This dress received a massive amount of traffic, but it was this one that you purchased.  It’s now sold out, but check out this one.  I’m loving the applique detail for spring.

Lounge Set

I discovered this brand during the pandemic and fell in love with the super soft material.  I picked up this set and already have my eyes on another.  For all of the loungewear I’ve purchased in the last year, this is by far the best.  Stay tuned for a full review!

Pro tip: size up. They run small.

Wide Leg Jeans

Wide leg jeans are having a moment and I, for one, love the comeback.  I shared these and you told me you loved the wash – I’m sold too.

Pro tip: this style is flattering on all body types, but especially pear-shaped ladies.  Go for a cropped style for maximum versatility.

501 Skinny Jeans

I’ve talked about these a ton, and they are well worth the hype.  Regularly $98, I’ve scored my last two pairs for $43 thanks to sales.

They’re super flattering and comfortable.  Cool washes keep getting released, hence my growing collection.

Pro tip: go for the 100% cotton styles.  They look like vintage denim.  Run TTS or size up if in between sizes.

Tapered Jeans

If you missed my 3 Spring Denim trends Reel, you know why this pair of jeans made another appearance.  The tapered leg is on trend and so flattering.

Washable, White Dresses for Spring

April 5, 2021

Washable white dressOver the weekend we made an impromptu trip to the beach.  I was wearing this dress and ended up chasing waves with my daughter.  It was such a sweet afternoon and we inevitably ended up soaked from the waist down.

I was so grateful to be able to throw this in the washing machine when we got home.  In an hour, it looked brand new again.

We have entered little white dress season, so I thought I’d round up some versatile, comfortable dresses that will carry you from spring to summer.

Here are some of my favorite washable, white dresses for spring.

Would I Still Wear That?

March 26, 2021

For today’s Fashion Friday, we’re traveling back 6 years to March 2015.  Three outfits of yesteryear that beg the question…

Would I still wear that?

Skinny jeansSimilar Jeans // Pumps // Shirt // Clutch

First up is this business chic denim look.  Yes, I realize denim is not “business” but with the button-down shirt, power pumps and pink clutch, it feels like a casual Friday at the office.

Verdict?  I still own and wear everything but the clutch.

White jeansSimilar Jeans // Top // Shoes // Sunglasses

Next up is another business chic denim look, but this time with a spring staple – white jeans.

While I no longer wear white jeans, back in the day I had a few pairs.  I absolutely think they are a closet staple (if you like white jeans) and can be worn year-round if styled right.  Here are some of my favorites.

Fun fact – these pumps are YSL.  They were one of my first (maybe even THE first!) designer shoe purchases.  I scored them after scouring the aisles of Nordstrom Rack.  I wore them so much the heel snapped off twice.  I kept repairing them until they became too far gone.

White jeans

Verdict? I still wear the top and the shoes rest safely in my closet.  The jeans and sunnies are no more.

Flare leg jeansSimilar Jeans // Top // Shoes

Finally, this flare leg denim look was a big one for me.  I hate showing my mid-drift, but absolutely fell in love with this top and had to have it.  Six years ago jeans were very much in the mid-rise phase.  Thankfully when I wear this top today, my jeans cover my mid-drift and this shirt is no longer a crop top.

Verdict?  Still own and wear everything.

Balloon Sleeved Spring Dress

March 23, 2021

Simon Miller Combat BootsGanni balloon sleeve dressNecklace // Dress (different print) // Sunglasses (similar) // Bag // Boots

As I said last week, I have spring dresses on the brain.

While summer dresses tend to be sleeveless and itty bitty, spring dresses have so much more versatility.  With tons of fabric, length and sleeve options, they are the perfect transitional wardrobe piece.

Style tip: pair your spring dress with boots while the weather is still cool.  Swap boots for sandals once summer hits.

This Ganni dress is from last season, but the brand remakes this same silhouette in different fabrics each year.  The balloon sleeves have so much personality.  Plus, it’s the most comfortable thing ever.

I paired mine with my best shoe purchase of 2020.  Seriously these boots are everything.  Throw on a pair of combat or Chelsea boots to complete your perfect spring look.
