Affordable Spring Wardrobe Basics

April 22, 2021

Levi's 501 Skinny jeans Levi's 501 Skinny jeans Levi's 501 Skinny jeans

I recently purchased these jeans, sunnies, sandals and tank top.  All of them were under $50 except the sandals (they were $70).

What I love about each piece is that they’re all fabulous affordable spring wardrobe basics.

I’ve talked about these jeans a ton.  While they come in a stretch version, I prefer the 100% cotton version.  I sized up (wearing a 26) but also own them in a 25 and will share those next week.

I’d classify them as a skinny/straight leg hybrid – fitted in the thighs, straight in the calves.

The tank has a great fit and comes in tons of fun colors.  You can’t go wrong for $8.

I wore these sandals to the beach and they got soaked!  Even though they’re leather, they still look amazing and are SO comfortable and lightweight.  Totally recommend!

Aviator sunglasses are a classic shape and these fit my small head without looking huge.  The blacked-out lens makes them extra chic.

What I’m Coveting: Mules

April 20, 2021

Perhaps it was the Fashion Friday I did about 90s supermodels, but I cannot get high-heeled mules out of my head.

There are SO many good ones out right now and I’m coveting them… hard.

Mules & SlidesHere are some of my favorites, sizing tips and where to find the look for less.

For affordable options, check out this brand.  I’ve also tried on several pairs from this affordable brand and thought the quality and comfort was on point.

If you’re considering investing in a pair of Bottega Veneta mules (they did revive the trend, after all), I recommend this pair.  They are really stunning on and I haven’t found a more affordable option that gets the toe box right like these do.  FYI, they run a half size large.  The saddle color and white are at the top of my list.

This pair from Bottega is what started the mules trend.  The first time I tried them on I thought they were fabulous.  The second time, I had a change of heart.  IMHO, the large strap will get old and they aren’t versatile.  Plus, the price is SO painful.

Fashion Friday

April 16, 2021

For today’s Fashion Friday I want to chat designer collaborations.

Three collabs debuted this week; each with a unique twist.

Rejina Pyo x & Other Stories

This is my favorite of the three.  I’m a huge Rejina Pyo fan and this collection didn’t disappoint.  I’m loving the beautiful dresses for summer and amazing shoes.  Inspired by nature, this collab gives the strong feminine vibes I’ve come to know and love from Pyo.

Prices range from $29 – $249… and it’s selling fast.

Gucci x Balenciaga

To celebrate their 100 year anniversary, Alessandro Michele went into the archives and pulled inspo from originator Guccio Gucci and Tom Ford for his Aria collection.

There were strong equestrian elements – lots of horsebit motif – but the kicker was his “Hacking Lab” with Balenciaga’s Demna Gvasalia.  Suits emblazoned with both logos donned the runway.  With each house under the Kering umbrella, it wasn’t surprising, but it did turn heads.  Personally, a designer collaboration of this caliber should, but my heart didn’t flutter.  I’ll save that for Dries Van Noten x Christian Lacroix.

Canada Goose x Bill Nye the Science Guy

Bill Nye is joining the luxury outerwear brand to advise them on sustainability.  I think it’s fabulous and my inner geek is rejoicing.  It got me thinking of other fun potential PBS celebrity collabs.  If Bob Ross were still with us, I totally see a Valentino collab!

How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

April 15, 2021

Okay, I know.  It seems pretty obvious, right?  Is there really a wrong way to clean your makeup brushes?

I’m one of those people that loathes cleaning my brushes, so much so, that I have backup brushes to use just so I can prolong cleaning.  :S

Laziness aside, what I’ve picked up over the years are some hero products and techniques that prolong the life of your brushes AND thoroughly clean them.

Favorite Products

This brush cleaner is hands down the best on the market.  Made for a deep clean, I wet my brush and put 2-8 pumps of product in my hand while I swirl the brush around.  Depending on how dirty the brush is, I may repeat this process 3 times.

Bonus points: it’s currently on sale.

I do own a silicon brush mat to get deep into brush bristles, but 9 times out of 10, I prefer using my hand.

Why?

It’s gentler on the bristles and prolongs the life of your brushes.

For Artis brushes or brushes that are made to be used wet or dry, this brush cleaning pad is a must.

The antimicrobial cloth contains one million fiber strands per square inch making it the most effective cleanser on the market.

The cloth is machine washable.  They also sell replacement cloths.

I have also tried Artis cleansing foam and brush cleansing wipes but don’t recommend either.

For beautyblenders or makeup sponges, I recommend this soap.  They’ve added a charcoal (bacteria killing) soap and lavender scent to the lineup.

Finally, another technique I use to clean my beautyblenders is the microwave method.  I recommend using this for sponges that are only slightly dirty.  For a deep clean, use the bar soap and cleansing mat.

Microwave Method for Cleaning Makeup Sponges
  1. Place beautyblenders in a microwave safe bowl of water with a couple drops of dishsoap.
  2. Microwave for 1 minute.
  3. Let cool.
  4. Rinse with cold water.
  5. Repeat process as many times as necessary.
