What I’m Coveting: Hereu Shoes

January 14, 2021

HereuI just discovered Spanish brand Hereu and am obsessed.

Inspired by the heritage of the Mediterranean, I love how their designs have a mix of modernity and classic.  I get major Greek fisherman vibes from their shoes and clean lines with an edge à la Bottega from their handbags.  As a Greek girl obsessed with Bottega, you can see why I’ve fallen hard.

What I’m Coveting

October 7, 2020

Long cardiganCardigan (similar) // Tee // Pants (similar) // Heels

2020 is the year of the cardigan.  They’re the perfect stay-at-home piece.  Robe-like yet chic, you can easily throw one on or take it off.

One of fashion’s biggest secrets to looking chic is layering.  A cardigan is made to layer.  Whether it’s over your favorite tee or underneath your go-to jacket, it’s fall fashion’s pièce de résistance.

I’ve triple layered my cardigans.  Worn then with simple jeans and loafers.  And amped them up with killer heels and double denim.

What I’m coveting for fall 2020 is a batch of comfy cardigans.

There are four styles that I think make for a well-rounded wardrobe.

  1. The cropped cardigan – perfect with high waist jeans.  Wear it buttoned for a streamlined look or unbuttoned with your favorite tee.
  2. The grandpa cardigan – these are great for layering (tee or turtleneck underneath and a jacket over).  I’d pair one with slim leg pants or a midi skirt.
  3. The colorful cardigan – there are some beautiful fall colors and having one accent color is key for making your outfit pop (I’m loving this deep lilac shade!).
  4. The duster – these lay so nicely and most closely resemble a robe.  Hello, comfort!

How to Style Knee High Boots

September 9, 2020

Labor Day has come and gone, the temps are dropping.  Fall is here.

If you’ve been reading In Spades for a while, you know that fall is my favorite season for fashion.  I adore boots, chunky sweaters, leather jackets and lots and lots of denim.

Knee high boots have always been a closet staple IMO, but the last few seasons have really solidified their place on the fashion map.

I have a pretty particular opinion about how to style knee high boots (#sorrynotsorry).  Here are my tips for rocking a pair for fall.

Pair with dresses, skirts or wide leg pants only

A Part of the Rest vintage dressYou will NEVER catch me wearing a pair of knee high or OTK boots with skinny jeans or leggings.  This is a very unpopular opinion, but trust me when I say the chicest way to rock a pair of knee highs is with nothing else going on with your legs.

The boots need to shine.  Don’t over complicate things by pairing a layer underneath.

Knee high boots look amazing when they are slightly covered up with a layer OVER them.  Think midi skirts or wide leg cropped culottes.

Remember proportions

Wool CulottesKeep it chic by adding juxtaposition to your look.  If you’re wearing knee high boots with a mini skirt, you need a chunky sweater or long trench coat on top.

Pairing your knee highs with a midi skirt or culottes?  Opt for a cropped tee.

Both options create a visually appealing balance.

Experiment with TCP

Bermuda shorts suitTexture.  Color.  Print.

If there were ever a time to wear suede boots, it’s definitely in the form of a knee high.  I LOVE a slouchy knee high boot!

Color-wise my advice is to stick with metallic.  Technically a neutral, but definitely in the color category thanks to the shine factor.

I’ve seen some fun prints on knee high boots, but the ultimate choice IMO is snakeskin.

All of the above step outside the box just enough to be memorable, but are still versatile enough to interchange with lots of items in your closet.  It’s all about the cost per wear!

Which leads me to my final point.

Keep it Simple

Beaufille Pasiphae CorsetKnee high boots are already SUCH a statement.  Take Coco Chanel’s advice and remove (multiple) accessories before leaving the house – you’ve got enough going on with your feet.  You don’t need adornment everywhere.

The same goes for layers.  Layers look great with knee high boots, but keep the color palette monochrome if so.

DIY Beaded Bracelets

September 3, 2020

DIY Beaded BraceletsOver the weekend I did my best to unplug.  I barely picked up my phone.  It was fabulous for many reasons, but one unexpected one was crafting.

If you know me well, you know my creativity comes in the form of having the fashion eye… and that’s about it.  I’m the last person you want decorating anything or helping with your kid’s art project.  I bring new meaning to the term Pinterest fail.

So when I picked up a bunch of affordable bead making kits, I wasn’t expecting to be very good at it, let alone enjoy it as much as I did.

I think I’ve found my new hobby!

Below are my picks for easy, fun DIY beaded bracelets.

You’ll Need
  1. 0.8mm elastic cord – wrap the cord around your wrist, meeting at the lower thumb knuckle bone. Add 2 inches of slack.  Double-knot the cord on one end and start!
  2. Beads – I’m currently a fan of pastels (they look so retro) but definitely have these evil eye beads and a darker color palette on the brain for fall.

Finish your bracelet by double knotting the end before you tie the two ends together.  This keeps the beads stable.

It took me about 30min to make 7 bracelets – super easy and quick!

Tips

Look for beads with a 1mm hole or larger.  Anything too close to the 0.8mm cord width is going to be super hard to make and take forever.

With so many companies charging lots of money for very similar bracelets, this is a super fun activity to do with kids (or just solo) at an affordable price.
