Style... in abundance

What I’m Coveting

April 15, 2020

With summer approaching and self-quarantine still in place, I’m trying to spend as much time outdoors as I can.  It’s the one thing I feel we still get to “do” even if it’s just sitting on the porch or taking a walk around the neighborhood.  I’ll take it!

I never go outside without a hat – read why here – so having something functional and stylish is key.

For summer, I’m all about straw hats.  They’re packable, breathe well and offer great sun protection.  I’ve found 3 straw hat styles that work best for me – boater hats, Panama hats and visors.

I recently scored a couple new ones on sale and wanted to share my tips for what to look for.  Read on for sizing, fit and outfit pairing tips.

Straw Boater Hats

Straw Boater Hat

Boaters come in wide or narrow brims and have a stiff straw so they hold their shape well.  I prefer a wide brim boater – better sun protection and the stiff shape works well on larger hats.

Pros: fashion-forward and versatile.  You can easily dress it up, down, make it more feminine or edgy.  A narrow brim boater is better for causal looks while a wide brim boater lends well to dramatic looks.

Cons: boaters tend to have shallow crowns, so if you have a big head, this might be a tough style for you.  The shallow crown also means you typically have to wear it perched on your head (exposing more of your face to the sun), rather than pulled down over your forehead.  So if it’s windy outside, this is a tough hat to keep on.  Also, they aren’t packable, so they take up more space.

Boater Hats I Love
Panama Hats

Panama Hat

Panama hats are my favorite.  It’s a classic silhouette with a neutral vibe.  You can make them look masculine or feminine.  They too come in shallow or wide brims.  For city excursions or low impact sports (golf, boating) I like a shallow brim.  For beach or pool lounging, I prefer a wide brim.

Pros: they look good on everybody.  The classic style means you can find them anywhere and at all different price points.

Cons: no cons for me, but they do lean a little masculine so I’d plan your outfit accordingly.  I probably wouldn’t wear a Panama hat with something super feminine or to a special occasion.  The vibe here is little tougher and cooler.

Panama Hats I Love
Visors

With an opening at the top and back, visors keep you cool while still protecting your face from the sun.

Pros: you can wear any hairstyle with them (topknot, bun, ponytail).  The majority are adjustable so sizing issues are virtually nonexistent.  They are very compact – most can be rolled up by unfastening the back.

Cons: they definitely lean casual.  I consider visors to be 80% function and 20% fashion.  I wear mine while swimming or doing beach sports.  If you’re looking to make a statement, I’d go for a boater or Panama hat instead.

Visors I Love

What I’m Coveting

April 1, 2020

If you’re a long time reader of In Spades, you’ve heard me talk about Everlane before.  They make great closet staples at fair prices.  I first discovered the brand after searching for the perfect t-shirt.  My first order was their tank tops and tees, and I haven’t looked back since.

Everlane is doing a 25% off site-wide sale until Friday.

While they are pretty great about doing sales (their Pay What You Can is awesome) this is the first time the ENTIRE collection is on sale.

If you’re in need of some great wardrobe basics, now is a great time to pounce.

Here are some of my Favorite Everlane pieces
Jackets

The Best Linen Blazers

This linen blazer is the perfect transition piece from spring to summer.  It’s a cotton blend so it breathes well and it comes in 6 colors.  I may have to add the sandstone or soft rust color to my closet.

I’m wearing a size 0.  It runs TTS.  The oversized fit gives a bit of edge to a sophisticated piece.  I love that it can be worn casual with jeans or dressed up (over a silk slip dress and heels) for a night out.  The blazer is fully lined so it’s a high quality piece.

Currently on sale for $108.

Everlane Cropped Denim Jacket

This cropped denim jacket is a closet staple.  If you don’t have a denim jacket in your life, now is a great time to take advantage (I own 4).  I’m wearing an XS (runs TTS).

It’s currently on sale for $39.

If you’re looking for a regular length denim jacket, this one comes in 4 washes and is on sale for $66.  I love the bone colored wash for spring.

My jacket is paired with this Everlane skirt, on sale for $34.  I’m wearing a size 0.

Pants

Everlane Wide Leg Cropped Pants

These are honestly the most flattering pants I own.  I will definitely be using this sale to snatch up a black pair.

They come in 6 colors and regular or ankle length.  I am wearing a size 0, ankle.

There is a bit of stretch to them, so they’re super comfortable.  They also come in a straight leg and a slim leg.

Every pair is on sale for $54.

Tops

Everlane Silk Top

This silk button-down is a must.  I’m wearing an XS.  It’s incredibly hard to find 100% silk for under $100.

It’s currently on sale for $73.

T-shirts are the reason I sought out Everlane in the first place and I’m loyal to them to this day.

My current favorite is their oversized v-neck.  I own it in black and white (XS) and am wearing in the above photo with my linen blazer.

Currently on sale for $21.

Shoes

Everlane makes so many great shoes (try these loafers), but my favorite during this sale are these boots.

I included them in my Weekend Packing List round-up because they are super versatile and comfortable.  The block heel gives you some height without compromising comfort.

They come in 3 colors and are currently on sale for $176.

What I’m Coveting

Frame Le Original jeans

So I’ll be the first to say it feels strange to share a What I’m Coveting post amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.  There is SO much to process right now.  My hope is that you will find an outlet here.  What I keep coming back to is that I started In Spades to story-tell through fashion and personal style.  I want to find the good in every day and for me, that means communicating through my love language – fashion.

On Monday I shared my thoughts on how we can support small businesses.  They need our help more than ever.

In today’s What I’m Coveting, I’m going to highlight the nationwide sales that are happening right now.

In light of all the brick & mortar closures, there are lots of promotions and deals to be had.  If you’ve been saving for something or need a closet refresh, now is a good time to help stimulate the economy.

Nordstrom – 25% off sitewide.  I’m investing in this face cream, these miracle eye masks and these SPF protecting hats for summer.

Everlane – $50 denim until Sunday.  Go for the super straight (adore the black wash and vintage cuffed pair).

Intermix – 40% off.  Go for the vintage band tees and their dress selection.  Tons of options for summer, from cotton daytime to fancy evenings.

Moda Operandi – 20% off with code STAYHOME.  Their stock of Ulla Johnson is HUGE and try this brand for summer dresses and bathing suits.

Need Supply – 25% off sitewide.  My hero pair of jeans is on sale, including these that I picked up for a different vibe.

Net-a-Porter – 15% off.  My fave mid-range denim brand and high-end denim brand are on sale, plus this dreamy dress brand I wear during NYFW.

Shopbop – go for silk skirts from this cool-girl brand and amazing sweater selection.

AGOLDE Parker JeansAGOLDE Parker JeansMaje leather jacket (similar here) // Madeworn tee (similar here) // AGOLDE jeans
Quay sunglasses // Golden Goose sneakers

Ah, straight leg jeans.  I’m obsessed.

In January I shared my favorite straight leg jeans at all price points, and today I wanted to continue the convo by showing you how I style them.

These straight leg jeans are my hero pair.  Why do I love them so much?

  1. They’re SUPER comfortable.  No standing room only jeans.
  2. The cropped length gives you endless footwear options.
  3. The high rise isn’t too high, so you can easily tuck in shirts or wear more cropped length tops with them.
  4. They are 100% cotton.  They won’t stretch out, look baggy, and all of the washes they come in will be super high quality (you lose quality and wash variation when you add stretch to denim).
  5. They’re so versatile.  I can wear them running errands, playing with my daughter AND to a night on the town.

Today I styled them casually with my fave sneakers and vintage tee, but you can easily add boots and a cropped sweater for something dressier.  If you want to go even more elevated, I’d pair them with stilettos, a silk top and a leather jacket.

I’d stick to your normal size in these jeans.  If you are in between sizes, go with the smaller of the two.  This style is a staple pair for this brand so they continually make them season after season.  Shop the post below for some great sales on other washes!

The Shopbop Sale is here!

Every spring, Shopbop has a buy more, save more sale.

This is the time to pull the trigger on any investment pieces you’ve been saving for.  It’s also the time to take advantage of brands and styles that never go on sale.

Because Shopbop’s inventory is HUGE, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

My advice:

  1. Stick to wardrobe staples (premium denim, LWD’s, a great summer sandal, everyday accessories like sunglasses)
  2. Shop the sale ASAP.  It ends March 8th and inventory sells out fast.
  3. Err on the side of caution.  In between sizes?  Not sure which color to get?  Buy both because Shopbop has free shipping and free returns.  Because the sale is so short and inventory sells out, don’t risk losing out on something you’ve been eyeing.
Use code SPRING for:

15% off orders of $200+

20% off orders of $500+

25% off orders of $800+
