Like the rest of the world, my daily scenery consists of the rooms in my house and a dog walk/toddler nature excursion.  Despite the change in schedule, I wanted to give you an update on my life lately.

Binge-Worthy Shows

I finished The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and adored it.  If you love fashion, comedy and New York City (three of my loves) you’ll adore this show.  I love how meticulously put together Mrs. Maisel is while also serving up some loose-cannon zingers.  Her father, played by Tony Shalhoub, has me rolling on the floor laughing.  My husband said it’s been so nice to see me laugh while watching this how.  If you need some refreshing escapism, this show is for you.

I also tried Heidi Klum and Tim Gunn’s new show, Making the Cut, and sadly had to scrap it after 3 episodes.  It’s Project Runway 2.0 without the grit.  The producers obviously identified a favorite in the first episode, and I don’t think I need to continue watching to know who will have the next global fashion empire.

Next on my list is Cheer and Schitt’s Creek.  What are you watching?

Workouts

I’ve been consistent with BBG (the Bikini Body Guide).  I do four resistance workouts per week – legs, arms, full body and abs.  They are 7-minute circuits that get repeated 4 times for a total of 28 minutes of exercise.  You need minimal equipment – I use 3 lb weights and resistance bands – and it’s done through the Sweat app.

The cost is either $20 per month or $120 for a yearly membership.  Clearly, I went with the yearly membership and think it’s SO worth it.

My husband and I also decided to invest in a Peloton because we don’t think we’ll be able to return to the gym anytime soon.  It arrives on April 25, so once I’ve had a chance to test it out, I’ll write a review.

The Peloton app (which has yoga, meditation, dance classes, etc.) is free for 90 days.  You don’t need the bike to do these other workouts, so jump on the freebie while it lasts!  You must sign up by April 30 for the 90-day free trial.

Fashion

I’ve honestly only put on jeans once since self-quarantine began.  These jeans are my hero pair.  I wrote about them here.  They run TTS (size down if you are in between sizes) and come in several different washes.

I recently upped my loungewear game because my collection only consisted of two pairs of joggers.  Clearly with life as it is, I need more!

I’m going to update this loungewear review once all my new picks arrive.  Stay tuned!

New Obsessions

Okay, I don’t know that I’d go so far as to say I’m obsessed, but I am really enjoying Tik Tok.  I started creating videos.  Check them out here.

No, I will not be doing sexy dance videos.  I do have some ideas for a twist on my Fashion Friday series, so stay tuned!

Life Lately

This was the last photoshoot we did before self-quarantine began.  We shot right outside Copa Vida coffee shop, which is adjacent to Petco Park.  I remember feeling so excited for opening day at the Padres (I love a sunny day of baseball, beer and good friends).  It still blows my mind how much has changed.

Interestingly, I ran into two friends while doing this shoot.  It was so nice to randomly run into people and chat for a few minutes.  I long for the days when that reality starts again.

Yes, this is a hard time, but I know we’ll get through it.  Let’s continue to support each other, open the lines of communication and be thankful for the many blessings we have.  Sending you all well wishes for health, happiness and comfort!

How to Find the Perfect Pair of Vintage Dr. Martens

Combat boots were everywhere last fall and are back in full force this year.  I’m super excited because not only are they stylish, but they’re soooo comfortable.  For me, and the fashion world in general, the days of the stiletto are over.  Spikey heels feel so mid-2000’s to me.  I’d so much rather wear a block heel or platforms.  Although I do have my eye on this pair of stiletto boots.  Be still my heart.

Since combat boots are going to be everywhere in about 2 weeks (why is it still so hot?!), I wanted to share some tips for shopping the holy grail of combat boots – Dr. Martens.

Last winter I ordered a pair of Doc’s and was really disappointed in the quality.  The leather felt thin and had a weird coating on it that gave it a plastic effect.  What happened to the brand I thought I knew and loved?  While searching for the perfect pair, I fell down the rabbit hole of Dr. Martens brand evolution and wanted to share some tips.

Circa 2000, Dr. Martens moved their manufacturing from England to China.  Since the brand’s inception in the 1940’s, they’ve always been made in England.  It even says that on the label for Pete’s sake.  For whatever reason – cost savings, I’m sure – they went with this move and the quality has suffered ever since.

If you’ve ever worn a pair of Docs you know how heavy they are.  Not only do they have a lug sole, but the leather was thick.  It seriously took years to break them in.  I have several pairs from my high school days and they are still just as good as new.  The leather is truly indestructible.  With the outsource to China, the leather became thinner.  It honestly feels like polyurethane to me.  Totally fake.  Maybe they wanted to make them lighter weight?  Maybe they got too many complaints that they are hard to break in?  Whatever the case, they got thinner, lighter and just more… fake.

Thankfully, there is a robust vintage market for Dr. Martens and you better believe I dove in headfirst.

I discovered this Etsy shop and wanted a classic black pair with at least 10 eyes.  (The eyes are the shoelace holes and denote how tall the boot will be).  You guys helped me pick this pair – I debated between the 10 eye and the 14 eye, and am so glad I went with the 14 eye.  The length is perfect, looks so rad with skirts, dresses and jeans and as a bonus point, these babies have a steel toe, making me feel like a member of a German punk band.

So!  If you’re on the hunt for a pair of Docs, I highly recommend you go vintage (prior to 2000) if you want to maintain that original quality.  If you’re looking for something lighter weight that you can easily break in, go for a modern pair.

For my vintage lovers, besides this shop, check out this seller and this seller for some rad options.

The Ultimate 3-in-1 Belt Bag for Spring

March 26, 2018

Last week I talked about circle bags and this week I’m all about the belt bag.

With spring in full bloom and my due date three weeks away, my wardrobe has transitioned to be exclusively about dresses.  Although I have a couple pairs of maternity jeans, pants are just not something I’m interested in tackling right now – hah!  Thankfully, this is California and it’s not the dead of winter.

I picked up this dress prior to our Miami trip and have worn it several times since.  Shocking I know, as its metallic knit leans a tad dressy, but trust me when I say it’s perfect for daytime outings too.  I’ve styled it with a low, block heeled sandal for weekend brunch (it’d also be great for Easter) and with a stiletto for evenings out to dinner.

The accessory it’s constantly paired with is this amazing crossbody bag.  A “3-in-1”, the gold chain is removable and the bag can be carried as a clutch.  It also comes with a belt attachment to be worn as the most stylish fanny pack ever.  Stay tuned for what this beauty looks like as a belt bag.  Even with a pregnant belly, it works!

I’ve been eyeing a belt bag for quite some time and finding out I was pregnant was actually the perfect excuse (blame it on the baby, hah!) to pull the trigger.  I know after Baby P arrives being handsfree will be key.  Belt bags are the perfect alternative for moms on the go who just need their essentials, while the baby’s gear can go into a diaper bag.

If you follow me on Instagram you know I teased my search for a non-conventional diaper bag.  Stay tuned next week for the reveal – trust me, it’s a good one!
