Petra Collar Necklace

With the Coronavirus pandemic, not much is happening in the business of fashion.

Italy has shut down its retail operations, the stock market is struggling, and everyone is just trying to figure out how to best handle the situation.

What this retail stall means for you as a consumer is continued sales.  I noticed Net-a-Porter still has their end of season sale going (unprecedented for this time of year) and many other retailers are discussing starting their Friends & Family and other spring sales early.

I picked up the jeans and necklace above in recent sales and LOVE them both.  Those black snakeskin sandals are calling my name thanks to the block heel.  Bonus points that they’re under $70.

Other than What I’m Coveting, I’m sharing an interesting topic in today’s Fashion Friday on Instagram.

Did you know luxury brands incinerate unsold goods?  What’s your take on this?  What do you think they should do with unsold merchandise?

Happy Fashion Friday!

My original plan was to share my video Fashion Fridays on the blog, but for now, I’m going to change course.  Instead, I’ll be doing written recaps.  So grab your latte (or your HH drink) and join me for some business of fashion news!

First and foremost…

Raf Simons joins Prada as co-Creative Director

This is HUGE for the world of fashion.  Why?

The house of Prada has NEVER had a member outside of the Prada family take a lead design role.  Raf and Miuccia Prada will be co-Creative Directors.  With both of them excelling at sleek and sophisticated silhouettes, I think it’s a match made in heaven.

Plus, they both have a flair for the cheeky (Miuccia’s Frankenstein collection and Raf’s Roadrunner motifs at Calvin Klein).  I think we are going to see sharp as hell clothes with some really playful undertones.  In other words, my dream wardrobe.  Stay tuned for their first collection in September 2020!

Paris Fashion Week

There were some fabulous shows this season, but my two favorites from Paris (so far) are Dries Van Noten and Maison Margiela.

Dries came off of a total high last season with his collaboration with Christian Lacroix.  Some were wondering how he could top that, but he delivered in spades.  His mastery of tailoring and print mixing is out of this world.

Just like… John Galliano!

What John Galliano has done for Maison Margiela is extraordinary.  Like Dries, his structural pieces and the way he combines and layers silhouettes is next-level.  For fall 2020, he sourced vintage pieces from around the globe and upcycled them into new garments in a process he calls “Recicla”.

Below are some of my favorites looks from each collection.

Fashion Friday

January 31, 2020

As promised, I’m making a more permanent space for my weekly series, Fashion Friday.

If you haven’t seen the series before, every Friday I discuss what’s going on in the business world of fashion.  Important announcements, designer news and lots of fun fashion musings.  Since I geek out on this stuff, I would love it if you joined the conversation too.  What do you think of the fashion news I share?  What do you want to hear more of?

Let me know in the comments!

With haute couture kicking off in Europe, I dedicated this post to all things couture.

This Week’s Highlights
  • A 52-year hiatus from couture is lifted for one design house.
  • The transformation of one of fashion’s oldest luxury brands.
  • What is haute couture?
  • Behind the scenes stories of the women who actually wear couture (including my favorite story involving Oscar de la Renta)

Thank you for bearing with me as I figure out how best to film and share these videos on multiple platforms.
