Bottega Veneta storm bootsIt was only a matter of time.

I’ve written before how Amazon has been trying to push into the luxury sector for the better part of a decade. They dipped their toe in with Common Threads – a partnership with Vogue that brings awareness to brands impacted by COVID-19.

But a true push into luxury had not been realized until this week.  On Wednesday, Oscar de la Renta became the first luxury label to open an Amazon storefront.

This is, of course, HUGE news.  Experts were torn on whether or not consumers could ever think of the giant retailer as anything more than a place for fast necessities.  Could it be possible that we’d buy toilet paper and $3000 designer handbags in the same transaction?  With Prime delivery to boot?  Now Amazon has their chance to show us.

The Fine Print

It won’t quite be a situation of toilet paper and Gucci handbags in one click.  Luxury Stores, as Amazon is dubbing it, is an invitation only platform.  You must be a Prime member.  Beyond that, the criteria for being accepted is unknown (I’m currently on the waitlist).

When you do make a purchase, it will be a separate transaction from regular Amazon purchases.  Items are guaranteed authentic and can be returned within 30 days.  And yes, there’s free shipping.

The inventory and designers on the platform is constantly evolving.  I believe Amazon said it needed at least 12 luxury labels on board for this to be viable.  Stay tuned for which labels are next.

Why is this Appealing to Luxury Brands?

As with any business relationship, there’s always the question of what’s in it for me?  Amazon’s consumer data points are unparalleled.  They know how, when and what you’re going to shop for… even before you know it.  e-Commerce has long been a sore spot for luxury fashion.  The industry was painfully slow to adopt it, and their rollout of it is still a work in progress.  Not all luxury items are listed, inventory is different in store versus online and shipping can take a ridiculously long time considering the price points.

Amazon is a well-oiled machine that worked out all these kinks over a decade ago.  The are the industry leader.  Why reinvent the wheel or take on the burden yourself when you have an expert in the field trying to court you to use their platform?

What about other multi-brand retailers?

You may be wondering why brands like Oscar de la Renta wouldn’t go to Farfetch or Matches Fashion first (Oscar is already on both platforms).

Again, I think it goes back to consumer data.  Farfetch does operate as a platform, like Amazon’s new venture, allowing brands to dictate their own inventory.  But here’s the key difference.  On a platform like Farfetch, individual boutiques that sell luxury labels are dictating the inventory.  On Amazon’s Luxury Stores, the brand itself is in full control of their inventory, branding and message.

Interestingly, Farfetch is doubling down on their marketing strategy aiming to use brand recognition as the competitive advantage for driving sales.  While they have been mildly successful, their growth can’t compete with Amazon’s.  Further, consumers have a hard time understanding what they’re known for because they carry SO MANY brands.  Have you ever tried to search for something on Farfetch?  The possibilities are endless.  A new website, logo and brand identify are to be launched this year. Will they succeed in becoming a household name in luxury?  Amazon will surely be giving them a run for their money.

Top 5 Favorites – August 2020

September 16, 2020

And just like that September is half over!  I totally forgot to post Your Top 5 Favorites from last month.  I love this series because your favorites always tend to be items with fantastic cost-per-wear.

Your Top 5 Favorites from August

I decided to clean out my pajama drawer and start fresh.  Two of the sets I purchased made your favorites list in August.

First, these fun zebra pjs.

I ADORE this brand.  These pajamas are incredibly comfortable and they’re made from organic cotton.  They make men’s, women’s, kids and even pet jammies!

I will absolutely be purchasing another pair.  Check out their short sleeve and shorts set for a summer pj.

These washable silk pajamas also topped the list.

I tried these on years ago in New York and waited to pull the trigger until now.  Yes, you do have to let them air dry after putting them in the washing machine, but they are SO worth it.

I love the slit on the legs (so comfy for sleeping).  The cami is double lined in the bust and could easily be worn with jeans and blazer for a super chic look.

Do yourself a favor and get them.  You won’t regret it.

Comfiest bra ever.

This bra has made your Top 5 Favorites list 4 times.  And with good reason.  It’s the most comfortable bra ever.  Enough said.

I own the racerback version and the normal version.  Get several of them and never wear another bra.

Hair Ties

One of my best Amazon purchases of ALL TIME.  They don’t stretch out.  They don’t pinch, pull or rip your hair.  They’re totally seamless.

Best $10 you’ll ever spend.

High Waisted Bikini

I hadn’t refreshed my swimwear collection since before having a baby (minus a couple one-pieces after she was born).

This bikini is super flattering thanks to the sexy, yet supportive top, and it has great support in the high waist bottoms.  It comes in 9 colors (4 of which are on sale).

Trust me when I say I loathe wearing bathing suits and this one makes me feel happy and confident.

Sweater Weather

September 14, 2020

Barrel Leg JeansSweater (similar) // Jeans // Bag // Sunglasses // Heels (similar)

Ah, sweater weather.  My fave.

One of my favorite cashmere brands just dropped their fall collection and it’s GOOD.

Remember the Khaite cardigan + bralette combo that broke the internet?  Well, Naadam made their cashmere version for 90% less.

For fall, I like to have a few hero sweaters.  Here are the sweaters I believe are a must for well-rounded wardrobe.

Cropped Sweaters

High waisted jeans are so much the norm it’s actually really difficult to find anything but a high waist anymore.  I also love paper bag waist pants and midi skirts for fall.  Both of these looks amazing with a cropped sweater.

Cardigans

They have a collegiate feel and I’m here for it.  The best part about them is the fact that they can be layered and worn buttoned or unbuttoned. Cardigans are workhorses of the sweater world.

Color

I love a good neutral color palette, but I definitely think one sweater in a pop color is closet staple.  I’m fawning over these purple ones!

Fashion Friday

LVMH dominated the fashion news this week with two very big announcements.

First…

LVMH Backs Out of the Tiffany Deal

Why is this such a big deal?  Had it gone through, it would have been the largest acquisition in the HISTORY of luxury.  $16 billion is a big freaking deal.  Tiffany’s global recognition would have given LVMH a large feather in its cap – one that could compete with Cartier.

So why did LVMH back out?  Experts have stated (and I whole-heartedly agree) this is nothing more than a case of buyer’s remorse.  In the wake of the pandemic, luxury as a whole is taking a major hit.  Revenues are down 35% across the board.  LVMH is trying to salvage its own losses; the last thing they want is to go on a $16 billion shopping spree.

Of course the lawsuits are flying.  This is sure to drag out for a long time to come with neither company emerging unscathed.

Kim Joes Appointed Creative Director of Fendi

While the Tiffany deal is history making, this appointment is the major news of the week IMO.

First, any designer that replaces a post previously held by Karl Lagerfeld has massive shoes to fill.  Karl is the only designer in history to serve as Creative Director for three labels simultaneously.  And he did so until the age of 85.  That’s over 50 years of multitasking.  Talk about a prolific figure.  Karl was truly other-worldly.

So with Kim Jones joining the Fendi team – while also keeping his post as lead designer for Dior men – one is naturally drawing parallels.

Opinions are mixed on this news, and I’m leaning towards – meh.  Do I think Kim Jones is talented?  Absolutely.  Do I think he’s the right fit for Fendi?  Probably not.  Fendi is big, bold and Italian.  Jones is more contemporary with a street style edge.  As always, I look forward to a designer that makes me look at things like I never have before.  One who will challenge me sartorially.  Here’s looking at you Kim…

How to Style Knee High Boots

September 9, 2020

Labor Day has come and gone, the temps are dropping.  Fall is here.

If you’ve been reading In Spades for a while, you know that fall is my favorite season for fashion.  I adore boots, chunky sweaters, leather jackets and lots and lots of denim.

Knee high boots have always been a closet staple IMO, but the last few seasons have really solidified their place on the fashion map.

I have a pretty particular opinion about how to style knee high boots (#sorrynotsorry).  Here are my tips for rocking a pair for fall.

Pair with dresses, skirts or wide leg pants only

A Part of the Rest vintage dressYou will NEVER catch me wearing a pair of knee high or OTK boots with skinny jeans or leggings.  This is a very unpopular opinion, but trust me when I say the chicest way to rock a pair of knee highs is with nothing else going on with your legs.

The boots need to shine.  Don’t over complicate things by pairing a layer underneath.

Knee high boots look amazing when they are slightly covered up with a layer OVER them.  Think midi skirts or wide leg cropped culottes.

Remember proportions

Wool CulottesKeep it chic by adding juxtaposition to your look.  If you’re wearing knee high boots with a mini skirt, you need a chunky sweater or long trench coat on top.

Pairing your knee highs with a midi skirt or culottes?  Opt for a cropped tee.

Both options create a visually appealing balance.

Experiment with TCP

Bermuda shorts suitTexture.  Color.  Print.

If there were ever a time to wear suede boots, it’s definitely in the form of a knee high.  I LOVE a slouchy knee high boot!

Color-wise my advice is to stick with metallic.  Technically a neutral, but definitely in the color category thanks to the shine factor.

I’ve seen some fun prints on knee high boots, but the ultimate choice IMO is snakeskin.

All of the above step outside the box just enough to be memorable, but are still versatile enough to interchange with lots of items in your closet.  It’s all about the cost per wear!

Which leads me to my final point.

Keep it Simple

Beaufille Pasiphae CorsetKnee high boots are already SUCH a statement.  Take Coco Chanel’s advice and remove (multiple) accessories before leaving the house – you’ve got enough going on with your feet.  You don’t need adornment everywhere.

The same goes for layers.  Layers look great with knee high boots, but keep the color palette monochrome if so.

Knee High Boots I’m Loving
