The past couple of weeks I’ve talked about wardrobe essentials – my warm weather go-tos and overall classics.  With summer officially here, everyone has one thing on the brain: summer vacation.  Whether you’re taking a big trip or a quick weekend getaway, your vacation essentials should be easy, comfortable and chic.

Summer vacation for me is all about the “S’s”: sunnies, sandals, straw accessories, nautical stripes and chambray (close enough).

Ann Taylor has long been a go-to for elegant classics.  I just took my first summer trip and refreshed my wardrobe with some of my favorite “S’s”.  I’ve been loving straw bags lately and when I saw this cute pom-pom adorned tote, I knew it was the perfect bag for sightseeing and beach time.  It’s lined in fun green fabric and super lightweight for all day wear.

Chambray is one of my favorite summer fabrics and since I already own a jumpsuit and blazer, it was time to add a skirt to the mix.  I love the paper bag waist on this one.  Bonus points because it has pockets!

Since entering my 30’s I’ve pretty much abandoned stilettos save for a few special occasions.  I much prefer a block heel and these beauties are not only sexy, but oh-so-comfortable.  With a padded footbed and super soft suede, they go with everything and can be worn all day.  They come in six colors (I may have to get the toffee ones too).

And who could deny a nautical strip for summer?  Crisp and classic, the pattern pops against dark and light colors alike.  This sleeveless sweater is super flattering and has multiple styling opportunities, a great bonus when on vacation. The keyhole neckline is sweet and versatile.  I’m actually wearing it backward!

If you’re in the San Diego area, join me tonight for a Rosé Soirée at Ann Taylor Fashion Valley to celebrate the start of summer!  We’ll shop must-have pieces and there will be seasonal sips and snacks.  Plus, two lucky winners will take home a tote full of summer getaway essentials.  Details below.

If you follow me on Instagram, you know I asked for your help deciding between an updated version of a cowboy boot and some David Bowie inspired slingbacks.  Well, Western trumped Rock n Roll.

To say these Calvin Klein boots have my heart is an understatement.  No matter how hot the weather gets this summer, I want to wear them every day.  A perfect marriage between a Chelsea and cowboy boot, their modern take on the western style is so versatile and timeless.  I love the silver cap toe with the signature CK logo.  Talk about edgy meets elegant.

If you’re looking for a similar pair at a better price, check out these for $76.  They look amazing with denim cutoffs and a simple tee, as well as more dressed up for evening like I’ve done here.

To keep the rest of my outfit cool, I opted for a breathable cotton one-shoulder dress.  This dress was a steal at 60% off and is still available in a few sizes.  The dark floral print matches perfectly with the vibe of my cowboy boots.  I actually think it’s a little Westworld inspired, which I love.  Shhh, I still haven’t started watching Season 2!

Anyone else a Westworld fan?

Wardrobe Essentials: The Classics

Last week I talked about my summer essentials.  This week I wanted to stick to the theme of essentials, but this time, let’s chat about the classics.  These are the pieces you reach for again and again.  Those ‘never let me down’ staples that are good year round.

The Leather Jacket

If you follow me on Instagram you saw my recommendation for three leather jackets under $500.  One of my faves is by a small company out of Austin, TX called Understated Leather.  Today I’m showing off their Easy Rider Moto and I can’t recommend it enough.  Coming in at $418, this is one of the highest quality leather jackets I’ve ever seen.  It’s seriously right up there with Saint Laurent but at a fraction of the cost.  If you’re looking to invest in a classic leather moto, jump on this deal ASAP.  This company treats their leather to form to your body, so over time, the fit just gets better and better.  It’s like a vintage pair of Levi’s.  Fit like that comes around once in a blue moon.

The Skinny Jean

Speaking of denim, my hands down favorite pair of comfortable skinny jeans is the Citizens of Humanity Rocket.  I’ve featured this style on the blog many times before and can’t recommend them enough.  Truly one of the most comfortable jean styles out there, they mold to your body without stretching out and have the most flattering high rise.  I love the cropped length because I have short legs and they offer tons of different washes in both the cropped and regular styles.

The Perfect Tee

Last week I introduced you to Solana Beach boutique Pink Lagoon with my super chic shirtdress.  If you haven’t been into the store, it’s a gem in the Cedros design district.  Not only do they carry an abundant supply of Citizens jeans, but they also carry amazing indie labels like The Great, whose striped tee I’m wearing.  If you’re looking for a high quality comfy tee, this is it.

They also have other hard-to-find fashionista favorites like Ampersand as Apostrophe, SEA and Xirena.  Owner Jenny Livits is just as kind as she is chic, and I was thrilled to find a sartorial soul sister – she knows her fashion.  Her expertly curated wardrobe is reflected in Pink Lagoon’s amazing inventory and I love that she supports local, indie and established designers alike.

Pink Lagoon also offers personal styling services both in store and in-home and has a designer consignment vault.  It’s a great option for people like me who have an overflowing closet that needs pruning!  I consigned two of my barely used handbags: check out which ones here and here.

If you’re a San Diego native looking for hard to find labels or personal styling help, check out Pink Lagoon.

And just like that, the year is half over.  Summer is right around the corner and I couldn’t be more excited!

Since this is my first OOTD since having a baby, I wanted to share my summer wardrobe essentials.  Normally I’m a cutoffs girl in summer, but since my body is still returning to its pre-baby size, denim is a bit tricky.  I’ve been super into dresses lately and took major advantage of sale season.

This striped shirt dress is super lightweight and comfy.  Made of breathable cotton, it will keep me cool through our Socal scorchers.  I love the wrap effect – it’s a great way to hide my tummy and looks very “I just returned from vacation”.  I purchased it from an amazing boutique, Pink Lagoon, in Solana Beach.  If you’re from San Diego, you must check it out.  I will actually be talking more about Pink Lagoon in future posts, so stay tuned!

My normal dark color palette definitely goes lighter in summer as I swap all my black accessories for white ones.  I own this bag in two colors, and the white tumbled leather looks super crisp and fresh with any outfit.  These sunnies are only $14 and instantly brighten up a look.

My advice?  Invest in white accessories for summer.  They will look amazing against dark color palettes in fall and winter too when you want a break from your basic black staples.

Finally, these sandals are such a fun addition to my wardrobe.  The double bow detail is feminine without being precious and I adore the fact that they are tweed.  Such an unexpected fabric for summer but oh-so-cool!  They have a cushioned sole making them perfect for long walks sightseeing, running errands or cruising the beach.

There was once a time when I protected my clothes.  Like a squirrel hoarding a winter stash, my best pieces never saw the light of day.  They were treasures meant to be admired – but only from the view of my closet.  “Special occasion only” took on a whole new meaning.

Then I had a breakthrough.

I managed to score a runway item on sale.  It was a blush pink silk dress with floral chiffon applique and a cutout back.  Total stunner.  It made me look like an angel.

Despite being over the moon for it, it sat in my closet.  I was its sole admirer, staring at it through a clear plastic dust bag, perched on a velvet hanger.

Then one day I found an occasion worthy of its debut – a friend’s rehearsal dinner.  Twenty minutes into the cocktail hour, a guest tripped and used me to break her fall.

The action played out in slow motion.

First, the beaded strap on my satin handbag snapped.  Jewels burst in every direction spilling onto the floor.  Then, like a good Real Housewives moment, her glass of red wine poured down the front of my silk dress.  Not an ounce remained in her cup.

Drenched and damaged, I was speechless.  She never offered to pay for my dry cleaning or to repair my handbag.

My efforts to protect my sartorial treasures failed.

Since having a baby, I’ve observed how other mothers dress.  I’ve listened to their plights – many feel they can’t wear “nice things” because they will get ruined.  Little bebe will step on my suede shoes, rub sticky hands on my silk top, use my leather jacket as a Kleenex.

Well, guess what?  A perfectly composed grown woman can just as easily ruin your nice things.

The red wine incident taught me something.  No matter how hard I try to protect my fashion babies, I just can’t.

Shit happens.

So why keep my best pieces cooped up in a closet where no one can appreciate them?  Why not break them out of their sartorial prison and share them with the world?

Clothes are made to be worn.

It is this sentiment that fueled my choice of diaper bag.

There are tons of diaper bags on the market.  Some are even kind of decent.  But if I’m being honest, they all make me cringe.

So when it came time to make my selection, I went straight to the good stuff: the designer handbag section at Nordstrom.

I’ve long loved the Saint Laurent Sac de Jour.  When they came out with a softer, grained leather I knew it would be the perfect diaper bag.  The slouchy shape makes it much roomier than its structured counterpart without the added weight.  You can truly stuff it almost twice as full as the structured version without compromising shape.

It comes with a dual purpose zippered pouch that snaps in and out, so you can use it as a clutch or an interior divider.  Bonus points for versatility!

The key feature for me though was the shoulder strap.  As someone with bad shoulders, I need to carry a bag with crossbody functionality.  I highly considered a backpack, but at the end of the day, I’m a classic purse gal.  This bag gives me the ability to sling it over my shoulder, across my chest or rest it on my forearm.

To keep the inside organized, I got a ToteSavvy.  These dividers come in two sizes (I got the 6-pocket version but they also have an 11-pocket option) and a myriad of colors.  Mine comes with a washable changing pad and bottle holder.  The nylon fabric is so easy to keep clean and I love how it gives me the ability to use the handbag I want without compromising functionality.

So, if you are a mom or about to become a mom, know this… you don’t have to sacrifice function for style!

And for those of you not in need of a diaper bag… break out your special pieces.  Fashion is made to be worn!
