Coconut Oil: The Hero Skincare Ingredient You Need

October 9, 2018

Kopari Beauty Kopari Beauty Kopari Beauty Kopari Beauty Kopari Beauty Kopari BeautyAcler top // Rag & Bone jeans // Haider Ackermann boots // Marrow Fine ring // Thatch earrings

Last week I had the opportunity to stop by one of my favorite clean beauty offices, Kopari.  If you’re not familiar with the brand, they make non-toxic skincare using one common ingredient – 100% organic coconut oil.

The benefits of coconut oil have been widely praised and the Kopari mission infuses this wonder ingredient into their line-up in the chicest, this-is-everything-I-need-and-more way.

My first introduction to the brand was via their coconut body scrub.  I keep it in the shower and use it at least once a week.  It’s a fabulous exfoliator and locks in hydration.  As we move into winter, I’ll up my application to three times a week.

Since the birth of my daughter, I’ve been even more aware of the ingredients I use on a daily basis.  While I’ve switched to just about all clean/green beauty, the one product that continues to elude me is non-toxic deodorant.  I’ve tried charcoal varieties, spray on, the kind that comes in a jar that you apply with your fingers (I just can’t get on board with this application!) and everything I’ve tried has just been meh.  They all seem to work for like a month and then peter out.

Kopari recently launched their coconut oil deodorant and I’m smitten.  It smells great (so you do too) and glides on really easily.  One of my biggest complaints with other roll-on organic deodorants I’ve used is that they’re chalky and make application difficult.  Not the case here.  Plus the coconut oil softens the skin to make shaving easier.

I’ll keep you posted on how it works as the month goes on, but being a 2018 Allure Best of Beauty Award Winner gives me high hopes I’ve found the holy grail of non-toxic deodorant.

Spending the day at Kopari was nothing short of magical.  Their space is beyond stunning and has a gorgeous view of the ocean.  Talk about a dream workspace.  I love their beauty version of the Vogue accessories closet – it was so fun to play around in the space!

Arielle Levy captured these fabulous pics and we joked that the last one is my CEO pose.  I’m not gonna lie, being at Kopari for the day definitely made me feel like a boss lady.

How to Find Your Signature Scent: Fragrance Combining With Jo Malone London

January 18, 2018

Jo Malone London Dark Amber & Ginger Lily perfume
Jo Malone London Oud & Bergamot body creme // Vintage kimono

Last week I visited the Jo Malone London boutique in the UTC mall.  I’ve long been a fan of Jo Malone London scents but had never experienced the boutique setting outside of a department store.  Beautifully decorated with their signature black & white color palette, it of course smells as divine as you would imagine.

If you’re not familiar with the Jo Malone London philosophy, they are the original masters of fragrance combining.  While you can of course wear each scent alone, their fragrances are best worn by layering two together.  As you know, I’m a big fan of bespoke pieces, so the opportunity to create my own signature scent was super exciting.

We started with a walkthrough of the fragrances I’m most familiar with (Lime Basil & Mandarin being a fave).  Its clean, citrus scent is the perfect base in which to start layering.  After a reintroduction to the classics, I wanted to experiment with something more intense.  English Oak & Hazelnut is a spicy fragrance perfect for winter.  I was immediately hooked.

One advantage of the boutique experience is being treated to a complimentary hand and arm massage with your choice fragrance combination.  It’s a great way to determine how the layering mixes with your pheromones, so you can easily experience your potential signature scent.  They also offer this service to groups, so if you want to grab some girlfriends and make it a day, do it!

The combo I chose is perfect for any season because it has a clean base and a spicy top-note.  I seriously couldn’t stop smelling my wrist for the rest of the day.

But I was ready for something even darker.  There are seven Intense Colognes.  Packaged in moody black glass bottles, I knew they were for me.  Two hit me instantaneously – Dark Amber & Ginger Lily and Oud & Bergamot.  They encompassed all of my favorites – musk, citrus and soft florals.

Worn together, I feel a bit like a Bond Girl – confident, strong and sultry.  No wonder my signature scent had to be photographed with a vintage kimono.  Any old OOTD wouldn’t do.

NYFW Prep with Bumble & Bumble

September 5, 2017

I can’t believe another season is upon us – NYFW is less than 24 hours away!  Although I still have outfits to finalize and packing to do, one aspect of my prepping routine has thankfully been underway for the past couple of weeks.  When it comes to health and beauty, I make sure to stick to a great exercise routine (gotta build stamina for those long days in heels!), get a facial so my skin is in order, and focus on getting my hair healthy for the week plus of constant heat styling its going to endure.

I’m a longtime fan of Bumble & Bumble products and when they debuted two new treatments in August, I knew the timing for my NYFW prep was perfect.  Aimed at “over stylers” like myself, their two new products include a protective repair fluid that can be used daily, and an overnight damage repair masque for more intense repair.

While You Sleep Overnight Damage Repair Masque
Two weeks ago I applied this masque to really kickstart my “get hair healthy” campaign.  The crazy part?  You apply it on dry hair.  I’ve never done that with a masque before so this simple difference immediately intrigued me.  After leaving it on overnight, wash out in the morning.

Pros:
– Smells amazing
– Instantly transformed my hair into that “I just got a haircut” feeling
– Split ends seemed to disappear
– Left my hair petal soft while still maintaining volume and fullness
– Doesn’t leave hair limp and lifeless like most repairing masques
– Works on any type of hair (straight, curly, coarse, over processed, color treated)

Cons:
– There are honestly zero cons to this product.  Check out the reviews on Sephora if you don’t believe me!

Save the Day Daytime Repair Fluid
Once the heavy lifting was done, I started using this after each shampoo/condition.  Its milky substance smells just as amazing as the masque and gets applied on the ends of hair to strengthen and repair past damage.

Pros:
– Lightweight formula that won’t weigh down hair
– Instantly revives frizzy/frayed ends by sealing the follicle
– Contains heat/UV protection perfect for heat styling and time spent outdoors

Cons:
– Again, I have nothing bad to say about this product!  The only thing I can think of is to emphasize that this isn’t a detangler but rather a protective serum.  So for those looking to detangle wet hair after shampooing, this will definitely help, but it’s not its primary function.

Beyond getting my hair healthy for NYFW, I also have an arsenal of products I rely on to keep my hair looking its best during the shows.  Since my hair is naturally very fine, I gravitate towards products that give me some oomph and volume.  Bumble & Bumble’s Surf line is my go-to for giving my hair exactly what it doesn’t have naturally – volume and texture.

The key to great hair is in the preparation.  Here is the list of products I’ll be packing in my suitcase for NYFW worthy hair.

Surf Shampoo and Conditioner
Straight out of the gate I get a little lift and soft texture which is sorely needed for the wavy style I want to achieve.

Before blow drying, I use their Surf Foam Spray to seal in texture.  It’s a great base for my curling wand to be able to “grip” my hair and really does wonders for holding the curl.  If you struggle with your hair falling flat 20min after styling like I do, this is the product for you.

After I’ve curled my hair I let it completely cool and then spray Dryspun Finish to seal the look.  What I love about this product is that you literally can’t overuse it.  No matter how much you spray, it won’t weigh your hair down.  It simply gives it a soft fullness.  Bonus points for how good it works on day old (or two) hair.  Need a little zhoosh?  Spray this on your roots and you’re good to go!  During NYFW there are definitely mornings where I simply don’t have the energy to touch my hair, so this product is a godsend.  I actually carry it in my bag – shhh.

Finally, Bumble & Bumble’s Pre-a-powder is what I need when I want to pull out the big guns of volume.  Shake it onto your roots and massage into your scalp for a gritty texture that leaves hair pliable and voluminous.  It works especially well when it’s humid outside and every other product seems to fall flat (literally).

Tomorrow we head out for the Big Apple and 7 days of crazy, chaotic inspiration.  Be sure to follow along on Instagram for behind the scenes footage, runway coverage and of course, some amazing street style.  See you in NY!

A Color Story

May 18, 2017

The first time I covered NYFW I met two boss ladies crushing the organic beauty scene. Sandra Anderson-Diaz and Nadine Cormier founded Nu Evolution cosmetics with a mission to create stylish, richly pigmented makeup free of toxicity. In the years since their inception, they’ve been the go-to line for fashion mavens, handling backstage beauty for several top designers during NYFW and beyond.

Sandra and Nadine taught me that 60% of what you apply topically is absorbed directly into your bloodstream! If you’ve been reading In Spades for a while, you know that using products free of harsh chemicals is very important to me. While I think it’s relatively easy to find great organic skin care, organic make-up is a different story. The few lines that are out there, quite frankly, don’t really work. Think dulled down pigments, barely there coverage and products with zero staying power.

Enter Nu Evolution. While I’ve been a long time fan of their lipstick – they make the most perfect red that looks great on any skin tone – I had yet try the rest of their line. Since my normal makeup routine rarely deviates from rosy blush and nude eye shadow, I wanted to up the ante with colors that really pop.

Inspired by the F/W17 runways, I gravitated towards green and purple. Each color palette makes for a beautiful alternative to your standard smoky eye, plus they look great during the day when used as eyeliner or in a subtle sweep across the crease.

Check out the two looks below plus my review of each product.

Eyeshadow: Soiree and St. Tropez // Eyeliner: Onyx // Lipstick: Allure
Concealer: Fresh // Foundation: 106 // Powder: 301

Eyeshadow: Couture and Socialite // Eyeliner: Chocolate Mousse // Lip gloss: Fig
Concealer: Fresh // Foundation: 106 // Powder: 301

Complete Coverage Foundation
I like to say Nu Evolution’s foundation provides full coverage without making you feel full – no mask look here! Formulated without mineral oil and dimethicone (found in the majority of foundations) you honestly don’t feel like you’re wearing anything at all. It provides a nice buildable base for concealer and powder, and like all of Nu Evolution’s makeup, it works great with water. I like to apply it with a wet Beauty Blender for even coverage.

Camouflage Cream
Whenever I try concealers, they all tout amazing coverage. The truth is that most of them can’t hide some hyperpigmentation that I’ve been dealing with for the past year. This formulation not only hides my dark spots, but it reflects light so well, I honestly couldn’t believe how awake it made me look. I was literally glowing.

The consistency is similar to what you’d find in a foundation stick and provides a moisturizing, dewy finish. If you prefer a matte look, I recommend topping it off with their loose powder.

To give you an idea of how gorgeous the coverage and finish is, the below photo is completely unretouched.  While I never overly retouch my photos, I want you to see the real deal.  No Photoshop here.

Loose Powder
Great for setting your look or using it as a standalone foundation, their powder doesn’t contain any talc, so it’s good for you and feels so light and fluffy when applied. I love that you can dust it on or build it up to achieve a full coverage look.

Eye Shadow
The shining star for me in the Nu Evolution line-up is their eye shadow. With pigment levels that rival and even surpass Nars and Mac, I’m hooked. When I showed them to a makeup artist friend, she couldn’t believe how smooth they went on. “Like a hot knife through butter” were her exact words.

Perhaps my favorite part is that they can be applied wet or dry. I used them not only for eye shadow, but also as eyeliner. I’m wearing Onyx in the purple palette on the upper and lower lids and a combo of Chocolate Mousse (lower) and Socialite (upper) as a beautiful shimmer in the green palette. For a truly vampy look, I’ll apply them wet on my eyelids to really bring out their pigment.

Lipstick
To say I’m obsessed with Nu Evolution lipstick is an understatement. It’s rare for a lipstick to be nourishing and long lasting, but this is the real deal. Applied in the morning it’s still going strong over lunch. Any fading that does occur fades evenly, so you’re not left looking like you applied some aggressive lip liner and forgot to fill in.

Lip Gloss
The little sister of a fantastic product, their gloss isn’t sticky and has rich color and beautiful sheen. For this green palette, I applied Fig and then blotted with a tissue to achieve an effortless stained look.

Botnia Skin Care

May 4, 2017

If you’re a longtime reader of In Spades you know that organic beauty is close to my heart. Using healthy ingredients has transformed my skin, so when a college friend introduced me to Justine Kahn, creator of Botnia skin care and Skin Remedy spa in San Francisco, I knew we’d hit it off.

Using locally sourced ingredients that are handcrafted in their Sausalito lab, Justine’s mission is to heal each client’s skin with natural remedies that work.

For the past two months I’ve been using Botnia’s face wash, hydrating serum and anti-aging face cream. The difference in my skin is incredible. If you know what it’s like to crave a product, my skin literally craves what’s in these little bottles. I’ve achieved an overall even tone – no more splotches or sallowness – supple texture, and calm, balanced skin that glows.

I sat down with Justine to chat about which ingredients are all hype and no action, the hero products you should be using and what simple, free steps we can all take to dramatically improve our skin.

Tell me a little about Botnia and Skin Remedy. How did you start?
I started Skin Remedy in 2010, after years of working as an Esthetician in the treatment room. My aha moment was really years of working with natural and synthetic products and seeing how I was never able to truly affect the kind of change I wanted in my clients’ skin. Most facials say they are customized and all that means is that the Esthetician is picking from the 3-5 products in her treatment room, not that the service is actually correct for your skin. So this led me to a school outside of Berkeley that teaches organic chemistry.

Botnia is a very simple line of skin care made from only remedies that I have seen affect positive change and none of the fillers that you see in conventional products. The first and most important jumping off point for me is that your skin is an organ and it’s job is to take care of itself, so having a product line that uses stripping ingredients and fragrance will not only take years off your face, but I find doesn’t work either.

What was the first product you created?
Face cream. Personally, I break out a lot and I felt like there wasn’t anything out there that was gentle, but also had good ingredients. It’s still my daily face cream. The formula hasn’t changed. If you go to my spa, this product can be customized to your skin type because it’s a base and you build on it from there.

What key ingredient are you loving right now?
Hydrosols – right now they are very hot. It’s a new science. It’s a plant protein that’s suspended in water. They have a lot of nutrient value for such a simple ingredient. The amazing thing that’s left after you kill off the more delicate proteins is all the different Terpenes. Terpenes fight acne and bacteria while being free radical scavengers. We use hydrosols as part of our preserving system due to its ability to kill off unwanted microbes. We also use it in our facial treatments for the same purpose – to kill bacteria and maintain healthy skin. All Botnia’s hydrosols are made in-house with our alembic still with plants we grow or source locally. We could not be more excited about hydrosols and what this powerhouse ingredient can do for skin while being gentle!

Are there any ingredients you feel are all hype and no action?
So I think there are two different angles to this question. First, yes, there’s a lot of collagen out there – which is inaccessible to the skin. Your skin can’t just take in collagen and then have more of it. Collagen is made from the inside out.

Snail mucus is another one. There is no way that a human body can look at this by-product and start to produce it or benefit from it. The process for having to preserve snail slime is counterintuitive to how it’s made and preserved.

Second, there isn’t a huge body of research being done in the beauty industry. It’s whatever the company decides is the messaging right now. I don’t see the science matching the claim.

What is your process for creating a new product?
Usually what happens is there is an issue to solve. From that place, I work it backwards. I look at what’s available locally. This is important to me to craft natural ingredients that are accessible (i.e. a fantastic ingredient out of Africa may be great, but not easy to source).

Right now I’m trying to develop an eye makeup remover. This is really lacking in organic skin care. We’re trying to create something effective that doesn’t make your eye area a total grease ball. We looked at cooking videos last week to test methodologies. We look at everything that’s available to us! Initially I thought of creating a paste, but that didn’t work. We’re still developing it.

What would people be surprised to learn about organic beauty?
There is no government agency overseeing any of it. It’s the number one thing that needs to change in our industry. That’s one of the different things about Botnia – we have a lab classification code. Clayton, our biologist, managed a lab at Stanford and brought Botnia to code. When people say it’s “handmade in their kitchen” people don’t realize that could mean the kitchen where the maker eats! Organic beauty can be dangerous too because there is no oversight. No one regulates any of this.

Several Korean skin care lines use a 12-step process. In your eyes, what is the perfect skin care routine?
In my mind it’s different for everyone. We’re all unique snowflakes. For the majority of women, simple is better. Our skin is an organ and it knows how to take care of itself. From there, I talk to my clients about diet – how are you interacting with your organ (sleep, exercise, alcohol, cigarettes)? From how they treat their body, you can usually deduce what they need. People who burn the candle at both ends need more, but for the average client I recommend a cleanser, toner, moisturizer, night-time serum and eye cream. Use a mask once a week – not like crazy.

Are there any application techniques you recommend that make products work better?
The big secret of skin care is “stimulation circulation” – massaging your skin to achieve lymphatic draining. This increases cellular regeneration and it’s free! Everyone should be doing it. It’s so easy to do. Set your iPhone timer for a full minute while your washing your face. If you do this for 30 days I guarantee you’ll see a difference. Most people don’t spend enough time.

I developed my moisturizer with the idea that I wanted it to be emollient enough so it took time to get it into your skin and absorb. I wanted it to feel natural to keep massaging it into your face.

What does your “typical” day look like?
I have a lot of different roles within my world and that’s awesome. My day usually starts with making an amazingly delicious green smoothie and drinking it with my daughter. Spending time with my family is so important. It’s important to create those spaces for the things that truly matter. I’ve built this into my everyday life.

Beyond that, the next thing is going to the garden, doing some weeding, going to the lab and jumping into the day. Right now we’re making our daily face wash. I’m going to go add labels to the products now. I was at the spa earlier doing facials. It’s a pretty jam-packed day. It’s also so exciting because I’m never really doing the same thing each day.

What is the best part of what you do?
My ability to actually help people. When I have a client that has struggled with her skin for years and I’m able to effect change and make her a more confident person with the ethical background that Botnia has brought to the table… that makes me the happiest. When clients say, “I’ve never had skin like this and I’ve been using chemicals my entire life!” That makes me so happy.

Stranded on a desert island – what cocktail would you take with you?
Straight tequila with a lime on the side. Agave plants are pretty magical. I have a love for all things agave.
